Boltz has suspended bitcoin exchange services
Boltz has disabled its bitcoin exchange services until further notice after the company reported a sharp increase in automated AI-assisted attacks on its infrastructure. The unmanaged exchange provider said on Monday that it had handled multiple attacks in the past few months. Although each incident was contained, Boltz concluded that attackers could identify and exploit vulnerabilities faster than his smaller development team could patch them.
The company said attacks have accelerated significantly in the past few days, and problems discovered by its latest security scan make it irresponsible to restore service immediately. Boltz has not announced a reopening date and warned users not to expect redemption services to resume soon.
Why was Boltz closed?
Boltz said its infrastructure will face more frequent "automated AI-assisted detection" this year. It believes there may be multiple well-resourced groups targeting the platform and its developers are working to fix it.
The company has not released technical details of the attack, nor has it provided conclusive evidence of how artificial intelligence was used. However, AI tools can help attackers scan open code, test for vulnerabilities, and quickly modify unsuccessful attack attempts.
This puts a huge disadvantage on smaller open source teams. Attackers can continue to operate and automate most of the discovery process, while defenders still need to review discoveries, develop patches, and test changes.
A pay-as-you-prompted AI service (which accepts cryptocurrencies) also said it frequently encountered suspected AI-driven attacks. Michael Coates, head of security at the Solana Foundation, has previously said that crypto companies need autonomous defenses because human teams cannot respond at machine speed.
Are Boltz user funds at risk?
Boltz said no client funds were ever at risk because their conversions were non-custodial.
The service uses atomic exchanges to transfer Bitcoin and assets denominated in Bitcoin between the Bitcoin Main Network, Lightning Network and Liquid Network. Users retain control of assets rather than deposit them into accounts controlled by Boltz.
Unmanaged infrastructure can still suffer from software vulnerabilities, transaction interruptions, and service interruptions. Users who have not completed redemption should keep their redemption ID, refund documents, recovery keys and other transaction information.
Boltz said its API will remain available to process refunds, while its support team will continue to assist users.
What Boltz's shutdown means
Boltz helps users transfer funds between different Bitcoin layers without relying on a centralized exchange. As a result, its suspension could affect wallets and apps that use Boltz infrastructure for lightning network or liquid network redemption.
Data shows that as of press time, the total value of locked positions is approximately US$262,187. However, this number does not necessarily represent the full value of transactions routed through the platform.
Boltz is currently reviewing its systems and deploying fixes. Until another update is released, users should avoid new redemption and only use official support channels for refund or recovery assistance.
