Boltz shuts down redemption service indefinitely: A wave of AI attacks forces Bitcoin Lightning Internet service providers to shut down
On Monday, Boltz shut down its redemption service indefinitely. The unmanaged service, which allows users to transfer Bitcoin between the Lightning Network and the Bitcoin base layer, informs users that a growing wave of AI-assisted attacks has made it impossible to operate safely.
Lightning network users and a smaller open source team support most of the infrastructure for Bitcoin payments. Boltz said the problem lies in the speed at which attackers operate today.
Boltz: The attacker's iteration speed has exceeded the repair speed
Boltz said in a post posted on the X platform that the redemption service was "suspended until further notice" and did not give any possible recovery timetable.
"What needs to be clear: This is not a response to a single incident," the Bitcoin bridge service provider said. Over the past few months, they have seen a continued increase in automated, AI-assisted detection activity against their systems and handled multiple exploitative attacks, each time being controlled.
"Attackers are now iterating faster than a team of our size can discover and patch vulnerabilities," Boltz said. Recent security scans have prevented the company from responsibly restarting redemption services while "being actively attacked by multiple groups that seem to have sufficient resources at the same time, and we are racing against time to deploy repairs."
The company described the change as a "significant paradigm shift for Bitcoin services operating on the open source stack." It told users: "Don't expect redemption services to resume anytime soon."
(Update: Boltz will remain off until further notice. Our API can still be used to process cooperative refunds. Regardless, unilateral refunds are still valid because they do not rely on our infrastructure. Our support team can still be contacted.)

Boltz confirmed that no users lost funds because it never controlled customers 'tokens. Redemption occurs through a hashed time-locked contract, a mechanism that either completes the transaction in a single block or cancels it.
Exchange services transfer value between regular Bitcoin, Lightning Internet Bitcoin and Liquid Internet Bitcoin. "User funds have never been at risk," Boltz said."We bear all the losses ourselves."
Boltz did not disclose its trading volume, while DeFiLlama data showed the total value of its locked positions was approximately US$262,000. The API is still running, so users can process cooperative refunds, and unilateral refunds are always valid because they do not rely on Boltz's infrastructure.
AI continues to appear in major Bitcoin hacking attacks
Bull Bitcoin tells users that Lightning Internet payments and Liquid-to-Bitcoin conversions in their wallets "will fail without prompting" while they are looking for a fix. Aqua Wallet issued a similar notice and said it is working with Boltz to find alternative paths for Lightning Online redemption.
This shutdown is a warning to all teams working on the open source stack with sparse staff. AI attackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and the cost of maintaining enterprise-level security "will be unaffordable for many innovative startups working on services that involve customer funds, even non-custodial funds," said Swan co-founder Yan Pritzker.
AI software has been linked to a mnemonic attack on Coldcard's hardware wallet, which was involved in the theft of more than $100 million in Bitcoin. Cryptopolitan also reported a similar trend in the DeFi space, with GoPlus Security saying that in 48 hours, four smart contract attacks resulted in more than $1.5 million stolen.
The A16z encryption department found that once ready-made AI agents were provided with structured attack knowledge, their success rate in exploiting known vulnerabilities jumped from 10% to 70%.
