Zeus Wallet was attacked and infrastructure was offline

Zeus Wallet took its infrastructure offline after being attacked, and the self-managed Bitcoin (BTC) service provider said its customers 'funds were safe and no Lightning network vulnerabilities were found.

Points

Zeus contained the attack within hours and kept the infrastructure offline for audits. No customer funds were lost, and investigators found no lightning node software vulnerabilities. Users with closed Lightning service provider channels will receive a replacement channel after service is restored.

Zeus cyber attack

The incident occurred on Wednesday, and on Thursday Zeus reportedly disabled its support systems during a review of the vulnerability. Service has not yet been restored and the company has not provided a recovery timetable. The service is still not available.

In an August 5 security update, founder Evan Kaloudis said: "We believe this incident is limited to Zeus infrastructure," adding that investigators found no Lightning software vulnerabilities and no customer funds were lost or at risk.

Kaloudis said the team mitigated the attack within hours and will issue alternative channels to customers whose Lightning service provider connections have been closed until the platform can process requests again. Zeus had not yet described the attack method.

Bitcoin Wallet Risk

This distinction is important because self-hosting protects control of private keys, but wallet providers may still operate support services that affect channel management, mobility routing, switching, and application availability during infrastructure failures. As a result, a shutdown may interrupt access to features without allowing the carrier to hold customer balances, while recovery work occurs without moving user-controlled keys.

The wallet is still offline. Zeus said the incident strengthened its support for trusted execution environments, or enclosures, and the Verify Lightning Signatories project, which separates signing rights from potentially exposed infrastructure and limits damage if a server is breached.

The breach followed Zeus 'decision on August 3 to disable the exchange function because unmanaged bitcoin exchange provider Boltz suspended its platform until further notice, causing Zeus users to experience a second service interruption in the same week. These incidents involve separate systems.
