Service was interrupted after Boltz shut down

On August 5, 2026, the self-hosted Bitcoin Lightning web application Zeus Wallet decided to fully offline its infrastructure after discovering that its system had encountered a cyber attack. According to the company, the intrusion was effectively controlled within hours, but management chose to keep services suspended while conducting a comprehensive security review.

"ZEUS infrastructure has been temporarily offline due to a cybersecurity incident. The attack has been contained. We kept services offline before resuming operations to conduct a thorough audit of all systems. Client funds were neither lost nor at risk."-- ZEUS (@ZeusLN) August 5, 2026

In a detailed statement posted on the company's official blog, founder Evan Kaloudis explained that preliminary investigations showed that the intrusion was limited to Zeus's internal systems. Importantly, he emphasized that no user funds were stolen or threatened, and investigators had not found any vulnerabilities that could be exploited in the Lightning Node software itself.

The wallet runs on a self-managed architecture, which means that each user directly controls his own cryptocurrency assets rather than leaving them to the platform for custody. According to Zeus, this basic design choice plays a key role in protecting user assets in security incidents.

Zeus did not disclose specific details about the attack methods or how unauthorized parties hacked into its systems. In addition, the company did not provide any estimated timetable for service restoration.

Provide alternative channels for affected users

Some Zeus users experienced an unexpected shutdown of their service provider channels due to service interruptions. The company promises to provide alternative channels for these users after normal operations are resumed and customer requests are processed.

Users affected by the channel closure have been instructed to contact customer service through the Help section within the Zeus mobile app. The company acknowledges that due to the surge in support orders, response times may be longer than normal.

According to Kaloudis, this security incident verified the work of the company's continued development of a trusted execution environment (commonly called a safe area). He also highlighted that the Verify Lightning Signatories project is a key component of the security enhancements Zeus has been implementing to prevent similar attacks in the future.

Service interruption after Boltz shutdown

The shutdown related to the cyber attack occurred days after Zeus implemented another important service change. Earlier this week, the wallet platform deactivated its redemption feature after Boltz, an unmanaged bitcoin redemption service provider, announced an indefinite suspension of operations.

Zeus confirmed that the removal of the redemption feature was a direct result of the suspension of Boltz's operations. Although the two interruptions occurred within a short period of time, the company issued separate announcements for each situation and did not imply any connection between the two.

Zeus remains committed to completing a comprehensive internal security assessment before restoring any infrastructure components. Processing of alternative lightning channels for affected users will begin after the platform resumes operating status.

As of now, the company has not announced a target date for resuming normal services.
