Jack Dorsey launches decentralized chat application Buzz

Billionaire technology entrepreneur and Block co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched a new Group chats platform called Buzz that aims to provide open source, decentralized alternatives to existing workspace tools such as Slack.

Buzz: Decentralized workspace solution

Dorsey described Buzz as a platform designed for "teams and agents of all sizes," emphasizing its model-independence, decentralization, autonomy and open source characteristics. The tool's structure allows users to chat with team members and specialized agents within a single digital workspace. Users can freely switch between messaging, planning, project management, programming, and pulling requests without leaving the application.

Buzz is built for teams of any size and provides a familiar interface to users who have used modern team communication tools, while prioritizing open and decentralized architecture.

parent company Block (formerly Square) said Buzz is built on the Nostr protocol, a decentralized Social networks infrastructure designed to provide censory-resistant communication capabilities.

Small Dictionary: The Nostr protocol is an open protocol that enables a decentralized and censory-resistant social media platform by allowing users to communicate without relying on a central server.

Commitment to open and transparent tools

Bradley Akerson, Block's head of artificial intelligence capabilities, emphasized the company's direction, noting that every organization ultimately needs a space where humans and AI agents work together. He pointed out the key differences between proprietary and open systems, and emphasized that Block built Buzz to ensure that such collaboration spaces remain open to everyone.

Block believes that the answer to whether the future workplace will be proprietary or open lies in the open platform, so Buzz was developed as a fully open source solution.

Dorsey's vision for decentralized finance and technology

Jack Dorsey, who once founded Twitter, has been advocating decentralized solutions for the technology industry. After leaving Twitter in 2021, Dorsey will focus on expanding Bitcoin adoption and transforming payment technology through Block and its subsidiaries Square and Cash App.

The Cash App allows users to send, receive, buy and sell Bitcoin, while Square's point-of-sale terminals have integrated Bitcoin payments through the Lightning Network, a second-layer solution that optimizes Bitcoin transactions.

Dorsey also expressed appreciation for the fundamentals of Bitcoin, describing Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper as "poetry" and promoting the concept of Bitcoin as a universal currency for daily use.

To further embody this vision, Block launched a Bitcoin mining machine with modular, replaceable components in 2023, designed to help miners reduce maintenance and replacement costs by upgrading only specific components rather than the entire equipment.

These efforts reflect Dorsey's broader strategy: accelerating the adoption of decentralized technologies, reducing reliance on centralized services, and empowering individuals and teams in all areas through open source alternatives.
