Lightning Labs releases Wavelength toolkit to simplify self-managed Bitcoin payments
As a leader in Lightning Networks 'core technology, Lightning Labs has launched an Alpha version of Wavelength. With this toolkit, developers and AI agents can integrate self-managed Bitcoin payments into applications through a simplified unmanaged API, without having to run nodes, manage channels, or find liquidity resources yourself.
Wavelength lowers integration barriers
Wavelength is designed to solve common integration challenges developers are building Bitcoin or Lightning Network-based applications. In the past, using Lightning Network required a lot of infrastructure investment and technical maintenance. By abstracting node management and liquidity acquisition, Wavelength enables teams to implement instant, user-controlled payment functions at a minimal cost.
Lightning Labs describes the product as "a simple model of Bitcoin for agents and humans." The system provides instant, low-cost global payments while ensuring users have full control over their funds.
Wavelength converts the most complex part of the Bitcoin and Lightning Network integration process into a few API calls, allowing developers to focus on the application itself rather than the network infrastructure.
Its core includes a self-managed wallet that can be run in web pages or mobile applications via WebAssembly or compiled binaries, or can be used as a stand-alone service. The user's private key is always retained on his or her device. This solution supports on-chain bitcoin payments, lightning network payments realized through atomic exchanges, and an off-chain settlement layer similar to Ark for efficient batch on-chain settlement.
Small Dictionary: Ark-like settlement layer, a mechanism inspired by the Ark protocol that supports users to quickly transfer bitcoin offline transfers and simultaneously settle transactions in batches to the bitcoin blockchain. This approach improves scalability and reduces on-chain transaction costs.
To ensure reliable mobility, Lightning payments are routed through Loop-a service developed by Lightning Labs for seamless channel management. Payments between users are coordinated by a service that never unilaterally controls funds. Users can always unilaterally withdraw funds into the Bitcoin chain at any time, thereby maintaining control and reducing custody risks. Wavelength's SDK is available in open source form for extensive community review and collaboration.
AI integration and system characteristics
Wavelength's API is open to both human developers and AI agents, using model context protocols. This allows the agent to hold balances and perform micropayments, such as paying for API calls or data flow fees at the cents level. Security measures ensure that wallet seeds and passwords are processed outside the agent channel, enhancing user protection.
The platform integrates the L402 protocol and supports machine-native authentication and lightning online payment with pay-on-demand. Supported operations include: creating wallets, unlocking, checking balances, sending or receiving payments, viewing recent activities, and performing withdrawals. Developers can adopt it as an embedded SDK, through the gRPC/REST API, browser-based WASM package, or as an MCP server. The documentation is aimed at human programmers and AI agents and includes quick start guides and tips.
Small Dictionary: L402 protocol supports authentication and micro-payments in machine-to-machine or agent-to-agent transactions on the Lightning Network, implemented through payment API endpoints.
Release details and roadmap
Currently, the Wavelength toolkit is available in Bitcoin's Signet and testnet environments. Use of the main network requires invitation, and interested developers can apply for early access after installing the toolkit. This version supports Bitcoin payments by default, and Lightning Labs plans to add stablecoin support through Taproot Assets to provide a unified API for multiple asset types. Future updates may expand embedded mobile support and introduce optional direct lightning network channel management (using Lnd).

During the closed Alpha testing phase, Lightning network transactions require a service fee of 1 basis point in addition to the standard Lightning network routing fee. Bitcoin transactions on the regular chain are still performed at standard network fees. The pricing structure may adjust as the platform develops.
Lightning Labs concluded that Wavelength provides "the easiest way to integrate Bitcoin for agents and humans", enabling instant, high-throughput, low-cost transactions through a simple integration process. Interested developers have been provided with instructions for applying for early mainnetwork access.
Thanks to convenient Lightning network integration and default self-hosting, machines can pay machines, and humans can pay humans, no matter where they are.
By simplifying technical requirements, Lightning Labs hopes Wavelength will make self-managed Bitcoin payments a standard feature for application developers,"atmosphere coders" and autonomous agents.
