Binance confirms support for the upcoming Stacks hard fork

Binance has confirmed that it will support the upcoming Stacks hard fork, which is expected to activate after approximately 279 Bitcoin blocks. The news was announced by Stacks founder Muneeb, who released the exchange's promise, as the countdown to network upgrades tightened before being activated on Thursday.

Changes brought by the PoX-5 upgrade

The hard fork, known as PoX-5, is scheduled to take place on July 29 after the community voted overwhelmingly in favor of SIP-044 and SIP-045. The upgrade will bring trust-free, self-custodial Bitcoin pledge capabilities to the network. More broadly, this change represents a major architectural shift for Bitcoin's Layer 2 network, addressing two of the network's most significant limitations: transaction finality and Bitcoin's programmable utility.

The upgrade introduces "Bitcoin finality," which the Stacks Foundation says will make Stacks transactions as irreversible as transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain, meaning the network can no longer fork on its own. Through this mechanism, transaction sequencing and rolling back on the Stacks second-layer network will be protected by Bitcoin's full computing power, and fast blocks shorten settlement delays to a few seconds instead of Bitcoin's 10 to 40 minutes.

Monitoring labels and market concerns

STX prices fell to a six-year low amid concerns about the monitoring tags of tokens on Binance. The Stacks team said the label change on Binance is likely related to the upcoming PoX-5 hard fork, and other major centralized exchange partners have been notified and expressed support. According to the team, once Binance completes consensus-level changes, the label will be removed.

Muneeb's comments suggest that the broader market has not yet fully absorbed the importance of this architectural shift. Binance formally commits to support hard forks, continuing its usual practice of upgrades with Stacks: during the network upgrade, STX transactions will not be affected, and Binance will handle all technical needs of users holding STX in their accounts.

As the activation window shortens from days to hours, attention turns to Binance's support and whether the removal of monitoring tags can stabilize market sentiment on STX before upgrades.
