BNB Chain sues former employee for unauthorized issuance of meme tokens

Former BNB Chain employee used old tutorial video seed phrases to issue meme tokens, and the company has filed a lawsuit

A former BNB Chain employee used wallet seed phrases created for old tutorial videos to issue a meme token. BNB Chain stated that the company has never created, supported or promoted the token and has initiated legal proceedings. Currently, the company has not announced the name of the token or any transaction data. This is the third token dispute involving insiders within the Binance ecosystem since the beginning of 2025.

BNB Chain issued a statement on August 1, admitting something that most infrastructure companies would rather never mention: a former employee retained the wallet seed phrase generated for the official tutorial video, regained access to the address after leaving, and used it to deploy an unapproved meme token. In the statement, the company emphasized that it was not involved in creating or promoting the asset, had filed legal proceedings against the individual and was cooperating with law enforcement.

Seed phrase: the "key" that remains valid after leaving the job

The wallet involved should not have stored anything of value. Team members generated its seed phrase when shooting tutorial videos-such videos often show how to set addresses on BNB Chain. The seed phrase is the master key of the wallet, and the person who holds it has control of the address and all of its assets. As a rule, the demonstration wallet should be discarded immediately after filming. But not this time, because the person who created it still remembered the words, regenerated the private key based on it, and then issued a token from the address where the community had witnessed its birth.

BNB Chain says and does not say

BNB Chain clearly delineated the scope of its participation and confirmed that it did not participate in the creation or promotion of the token or the wallet behind it. But what's more noteworthy is what they didn't mention: the company did not release the token name, code or any transaction data, only indicating that the asset exists on its own network-which is why the company believes it has to speak out.

On-chain data fills in undisclosed details of the company. On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain tracked the deployer and reported that the former employee issued a token called ASTEROID, and subsequently used four newly created wallets to purchase 796.7 million tokens (approximately 79.67% of the supply) for approximately $10,000. The same tracking data showed that he later sold 718.8 million tokens for 1,103 BNB (approximately US$638,000), making a profit of approximately US$628,000. BNB Chain has not confirmed the numbers, which only describe the behavior of a trader, rather than official statistics for the token.

Why a remembered key cannot be revoked

The normal resignation process is a series of switching operations: employees revoke their mailbox and Slack permissions on the day they leave, and the server login will also be invalid. But seed phrases are not subject to any such controls. It is just a string of words that someone can write down, take photos or simply remember after reading it once. No server-side control can touch people's memories. Once these words leave the controlled environment, the company loses control of them forever. The only feasible defense lies upstream: never use an active wallet as a one-time teaching prop, and any address that appears on the screen should be cleared or discarded immediately.

The industry has for years promoted the use of real teaching rather than simulation to honestly teach on-chain operations, but this approach also comes with a cost-and it is now evident. A wallet whose "birth" has been witnessed by thousands of people will accumulate reputation and automated systems will notice it. On-chain trackers and trading robots make judgments based on historical records, so an address that once appeared in official BNB Chain materials may still be considered a verified deployer long after the creator leaves. Bots don't consider context; they see a known address, flag a new deployment and flock in.

Three internal incidents in eighteen months

This is the third token dispute incident involving insiders in the Binance ecosystem since the beginning of 2025, and the mechanism for each incident is different.

In March 2025, an employee who had been transferred from a business development position in BNB Chain to the Binance Wallet team for only one month used information obtained during the BNB Chain period to pre-emptively trade in a token generation event. He bought in large quantities through multiple associated wallets before the public announcement, and then sold the tokens when they went online to make a quick profit. Binance suspended him and said the investigation did not find any signs of leaks from the Wallet team, while promising to cooperate with the authorities. A group of whistleblowers shared a $100,000 reward.

The case in December 2025 is even more sensational. An employee helped create a memin called "Year of the Yellow Fruit" and promoted it on the X platform through the official @BinanceFutures account within minutes of its launch on the Four.Meme launch platform. The market value of the token once approached US$6 million, and the transaction volume exceeded US$16 million. Binance then suspended the employee and referred the matter to the authorities. Five whistleblowers shared another $100,000 reward.

(March 2025: He was suspended for the first time in trading token issuance, using information from his previous position in BNB Chain. December 2025: Promote the tokens you created and use the official X account within minutes of launching. The market value was close to US$6 million at one time. August 2026: Legal action has been taken to issue tokens using the wallet seed phrase in the tutorial video and no indicators have been announced.)

What needs to change in developer relations

The operational lessons of this incident directly point to how encryption companies produce educational content. Generating real seed phrases in front of the camera becomes a long-term hazard once you accept that the people making the video will eventually leave. The alternative is not complicated: use a virtual phrase that doesn't unlock anything, or a temporary wallet created by a script to automatically clear the key at the end of the recording. These were not advanced tools, but they had not become standard before because people thought the danger existed only in theory-until an address in an old video started deploying tokens.

The outstanding issue now lies in jurisdiction. BNB Chain said it would work with law enforcement in the former employee's location, which means the outcome depends on how local authorities interpret the act itself: Does deploying tokens from a wallet controlled by an individual constitute fraud, theft of company assets, or is it beyond the reach of prosecutors? This determination affects far more than just this token. It will determine whether any infrastructure company can reasonably claim that the seed phrase once remembered by a former employee remains the property of the company.
