BNB Chain accuses former employee of privately creating tokens sparking controversy
BNB Chain is taking legal action against a former employee, accusing him of using mnemonic words in the company's tutorial for unauthorized operations. The employee was suspected of issuing a meme token called ASTEROID using the wallet recovery phrase created during a previous educational drill. This behavior prompted BNB Chain to announce that it would cooperate with law enforcement investigations and stated that it had no connection with the disputed token.
Legal proceedings are about to start?
BNB Chain plans to take legal action to make it clear that the issuance of ASTEROID tokens has never been authorized. Although the jurisdiction and specific procedural details of the lawsuit have not yet been made public, Binance founder Zhao Changpeng still reminds users to be vigilant, but no lawsuit has been formally filed so far.
Origin of disputed tokens
The controversy over the ASTEROID token stems from the address of a wallet that originally appeared in a BNB Chain tutorial to demonstrate the token creation process. Although its original intention was for educational purposes, the wallet became a vehicle for unauthorized operation. Previous similar cases involved tokens called TST, which also triggered unreasonable speculation. This highlights the hidden danger of repeated abuse of wallet addresses in the tutorial.
On-chain analysis platform Lookonchain found that a total of approximately 796.7 million ASTEROID tokens were purchased at four wallet addresses, most of which were transferred from these wallets, making a total profit of approximately 1103 BNB (worth approximately US$638,000). Despite the overwhelming evidence, it remains difficult to directly link these transactions to former employees.
A total of 796.7 million ASTEROID tokens were purchased by the four major wallets, accounting for 79.67% of the total token supply. Subsequently, approximately 718.8 million tokens were sold in these transactions, earning a profit of approximately $628,000.
The incident took a turning point: The ASTEROID Shiba team publicly denied any connection with the token and accused the new token of violating its rights. Such disputes highlight the potential risks of using easily available tutorials for malicious operations.
Blockchain security facing challenges?
The way to save mnemonic words is too simple, especially in a tutorial environment, exacerbating security risks. It's one thing to delete the private key on the device, but another to retain the mnemonic words. This challenge highlights the complexity blockchain companies face when protecting teaching assets.
As the investigation progresses, it becomes more difficult to identify and identify the responsible party. Issues such as legal jurisdiction, sufficiency of evidence and identity verification are pending, and communities are advised to stay away from such ambiguous tokens.
This case warns of the importance of protecting access credentials, requiring blockchain entities to strengthen security protocols when conducting user education.
