Ripple unlocks 1 billion XRP from escrow accounts, supply concerns eased in August

Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRPs from custody and returned 700 million XRPs to custody, limiting the incremental effective market supply to 300 million.

The adjusted custody sequence eased immediate selling pressure, and despite a historically weak performance in August, XRP remained above the US$1.0480 support level. Historical data shows that XRP has continued to decline in August in recent years, but this smaller supply injection has eased short-term market pressure.

Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRPs from its escrow account on August 1, while returning 700 million XRPs to escrow within the same trading cycle. The move limited the effective increase in circulating supply to 300 million XRPs, easing market concerns about additional selling pressure in early August.

According to XRP Scan data, Ripple first re-deposited 200 million and 500 million XRPs into custody, and then the network completed the planned monthly unlock through three independent transactions (500 million, 300 million and 200 million XRPs respectively). Therefore, although 1 billion tokens have been unlocked, only 300 million XRPs are actually available for circulation. This adjusted sequence immediately attracted attention because investors often associate monthly custody unlocks with increased market supply.

Ripple adjusts monthly custody process

For years, Ripple has maintained a monthly custody plan, which first unlocks up to 1 billion XRPs and then returns unused tokens to custody. However, this month the company locked in most of the tokens before the planned unlock was completed. In addition, this adjustment reduces the number of XRPs entering the market without changing Ripple's long-term custody policy. Traders therefore view the move as a measure to reduce immediate supply pressures in a historically weak month.

In terms of long-term performance, August has been one of the weakest months for XRP. Historical data shows that the median return for the month was-6.15%, while the average monthly return was only 0.54%. In addition, XRP for the past three years ended with declines in August: 26.6% in 2023, 9.17% in 2024, and 8.15% in 2025, further exacerbating market concerns about seasonal weakness.

XRP holds key support levels

While XRP remains stable during custody activity. The token established support around $1.0480 and then recovered to $1.0818, building on a July gain and keeping the monthly performance positive. In addition, the area has strengthened into an important support level as buyers held on to the $1.0480 to $1.0600 range throughout the custody transaction period. This resilience suggests that market participants absorbed the impact of reduced supply growth and did not trigger significant selling pressure.

Moreover, the effective release volume was only 300 million XRPs, eliminating most of the expected oversupply pressure. As a result, investors are turning their attention to the price stability of XRP rather than the nominal size of monthly unlocks.

Conclusion

Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRPs from custody and returned 700 million XRPs to custody. The actual circulation supply increased by only 300 million. The adjusted trading sequence eased immediate supply concerns in August, with XRP remaining above key technical support despite the month's historically weak performance.
