Strategy Inc (MSTR) shares rebounded significantly after a stressful opening, rising 1.80% to $94.96 as of 11:20 am ET. Previously, Strategy disclosed that it had liquidated 1,638 bitcoins and used the proceeds for STRC dividend distribution and important repurchase activities. The move marks the continued evolution of Strategy's money management strategy, as its leadership balances Bitcoin holdings, preferred stock commitments and enhanced liquidity buffers.

Bitcoin Liquidation Helps STRC Debt Repayment and Stock Repurchase Program

Strategy executed bitcoin sales between July 27 and August 2, with an average selling price of $63,957 per coin. The deal generated a gain of $104.7 million, which Strategy split equally-$52.4 million for dividend payments and $52.3 million for STRC buybacks. As a result, Strategy's bitcoin holdings decreased to 842,138, but the total acquisition cost remained at approximately $63.5 billion.

This liquidation is Strategy's second-largest bitcoin disposal this year, second only to the large transaction on July 6. Previously, the company sold 3,588 bitcoins for approximately $216 million, and made a small sale of 32 bitcoins in June. These actions indicate that the company has deviated from its previous traditional strategy of continuing to accumulate Bitcoin without selling it.

Strategy implemented a revised capital allocation framework on June 29 that allows the sale of bitcoins to meet dividend obligations, repay debt, build reserves, and execute authorized share repurchase programs. At the same time, the company increased STRC's annual dividend yield to 12% after preferred stock traded at a price below its $100 face value. Management subsequently optimized the method to incorporate multiple variables such as market conditions, yield indicators, volatility indicators and liquidity considerations into future dividend decisions.

Equity financing enhances cash position

Strategy also sold 3.01 million shares of MSTR common stock this week, for a total gain of approximately US$290.6 million. Of that,$250 million was allocated to U.S. dollar reserves, bringing total available reserves as of Sunday to $4 billion. An additional $28.9 million was used to support STRC repurchase activities, with the remaining $11.7 million supplementing daily operating cash.

These collaborative operations enhance Strategy's financial flexibility while funding preferred stock obligations without relying entirely on the Bitcoin mortgage financing structure. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor revealed that during the full weekly reporting cycle, Strategy's cumulative STRC repurchase amount reached US$81.2 million. He further pointed out that the expanded reserves extended Strategy's dollar financing capabilities by 57 days, bringing the total funding life to approximately 2.3 years.

STRC is crucial in Strategy's capital structure because this preferred security can help potential future Bitcoin acquisitions. However, continued trading below par value could weaken investor interest and reduce the yield of the new STRC issue. As a result, Strategy focuses on opportunistic repos at discounted prices while maintaining sufficient cash reserves to cover dividend commitments, interest expenses, debt obligations and operating needs.
