Bitget will stop providing crypto trading services to Japanese residents
Bitget, a cryptocurrency trading platform established in 2018, announced on August 3 that it will stop providing crypto trading services to Japanese residents. Starting August 3, the platform will no longer accept new registrations from Japanese residents to comply with local regulations.
The cryptocurrency exchange stated that it will gradually implement restrictions on Japanese residents starting from November 1 and forcibly close all remaining positions starting from December 31.
Bitget requires users who have received notification confirming that they are Japanese residents to complete identity verification (proof of address/KYC) to ensure that their accounts can be accessed normally.
The exchange warned that if users fail to complete the verification process by November 1, their accounts will be automatically classified as Japanese resident accounts.
Bitget said it will email detailed instructions on next steps and how to manage assets.
As early as March 2023, the Financial Services Agency of Japan first warned Bitget of allegedly providing unregistered cryptocurrency services to Japanese residents, and issued another warning in November 2024.
Last month, Bitget CEO Gracie Chen revealed that the exchange plans to enter the U.S. market regardless of whether Congress passes the Digital Asset Markets Clarification Act. She said that before launching the service, relevant approvals for currency transfers, derivatives and brokers would be applied.
