SBI's gumi bet US$86 million on XRP, pointing to Japan's market dominance

SBI-backed gumi builds an ecosystem with XRP at its core with a US$86 million fund pool and institutional crypto funds.

SBI-backed gumi is adopting a more ambitious strategy than simply accumulating cryptocurrency. The Japanese gaming and blockchain company has integrated its $86 million corporate digital asset pool into XRP and launched SBI Crypto Fund LLC, an $18.3 million actively managed investment fund in partnership with SBI Group.

These initiatives reveal a two-pronged strategy: positioning XRP as a long-term reserve asset for gumi while building the infrastructure and investment products needed to serve institutional crypto investors.

This adjustment of the capital pool is one of the most important commitments of Japanese companies to XRP. By concentrating its shareholding in a single digital asset rather than maintaining a diversified investment portfolio, gumi has strengthened its ambition to become Japan's largest XRP company holder.

This decision also reflects increased market confidence in XRP's expanding role in cross-border payments, tokenization and institutional finance, especially as SBI continues to deepen its long-term cooperative relationship with Ripple.

Complementing the fund pool strategy is SBI Crypto Fund LLC, which takes a different approach. It does not passively hold assets, but actively allocates capital to Bitcoin and other digital assets, adjusting its investment portfolio based on market changes to seize opportunities.

In fact, SBI and gumi are operating two complementary tools: one designed to accumulate XRP as strategic reserves, and the other provided professional digital asset management services to institutional investors.

SBI-backed gumi expands the XRP strategy through institutional funds and corporate accounting platforms

Cryptocurrency analyst Eri believes that the layout of this strategy goes far beyond that. According to Eri's observation, gumi is positioning itself as a leading digital asset treasury management company with XRP as its core.

A key part of this vision is the launch of the next generation digital asset accounting platform, which will be first deployed on the SBI Crypto Fund and later commercialized to institutional customers.

The platform was developed by Hinode Technologies, a joint venture between gumi subsidiary gC Labs and TISI Inc. The system, built specifically for listed companies and institutional investors, uses patent-pending technology and can automatically handle complex accounting for blockchain activities, including pledge rewards, Gas fees and on-chain transactions, while supporting seamless integration with existing accounting software.

By reducing manual reconciliations and improving compliance with Japan's strict accounting standards, the platform solves one of the biggest operational obstacles institutions face in adopting cryptocurrencies.

These initiatives are in line with SBI's broader blockchain expansion plans. The group recently partnered with Ondo Finance to use JPYSC stablecoins for tokenized settlement of Japanese stocks. At the same time, the number of registered accounts of SBI VC Trade has exceeded 2 million, highlighting the acceleration of the adoption rate of digital assets in Japan.

Therefore, gumi's XRP Fund, SBI Crypto Fund and Hinode's institutional accounting platform are not invested in isolation. Together, they form a coordinated ecosystem designed to support institutional participation in digital assets, integrating treasury management, proactive investment and enterprise-level infrastructure, with XRP at its core.
