Coinbase opens U.S. stock market to UK retail investors
Coinbase is opening the U.S. stock market to UK retail investors, allowing eligible users to trade nearly 4000 U.S. stocks directly through its app. The move marks a further expansion of the cryptocurrency exchange into mainstream financial services.
This feature will be launched on August 6. Eligible UK users will gradually gain the ability to purchase, sell and manage U.S. stocks while continuing to hold their existing cryptocurrency and fiat tender assets. Transactions can be completed instantly through GBP or the platform's native stable coin USD Coin (USDC).
Zero commission and fractional stock trading
This product does not charge any trading commissions and supports fractional stock purchases. Users only need to invest 1 pound (approximately US$1.35). Shares are managed by Apex Clearing in the United States, and all orders are routed to Apex for execution through Coinbase Capital Markets Corporation. Coinbase said the extended trading hours are aimed at reducing management friction between digital assets and traditional investments, and the market is open outside standard hours five days a week.
Keith Grose, managing director of Coinbase UK and Europe, said the release is part of the company's broader strategy to create a "universal exchange" that will integrate cryptocurrencies, stocks, stablecoins, savings accounts and lending products. He told relevant media that Coinbase plans to launch more products in the UK and EU in the coming months. Grose also cited survey data to point out that British retail investors participate in the stock market lower than their U.S. counterparts, and there is strong demand for high-quality U.S. stocks, especially in the artificial intelligence field.
Regulatory path shapes product roadmap
The launch of the UK equity trading feature builds on Coinbase's previous expansion in the region, including the launch of savings accounts and cryptocurrency-backed lending products. The recently obtained UK MiFID license expands the company's license to allow professional traders to trade derivatives and provide stock trading services to retail users. More products may be launched in the future under this authorization. Coinbase said that new rules on cryptocurrency regulation in the UK, which are expected to take effect in October 2027, provide the clarity it needs to further expand the platform.
When asked why it launched traditional stocks rather than tokenized stocks, Grose said providing instant value to UK users was a top priority. He added that Coinbase believes tokenized stocks are an important part of the future of financial markets and plans to work with UK policymakers and regulators to promote their realization as the regulatory framework matures.
Coinbase also expressed support for the British government's efforts to strengthen capital markets and expand retail participation by streamlining investment platforms.
