Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong: stablecoins and DeFi are opening the door to global financial access
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said that the cryptocurrency industry has expanded financial access channels for people around the world. Not yet enough recognition. Armstrong, who heads the U.S. -based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, points to stablecoins, decentralized financial protocols, tokenized stocks and digital assets such as Bitcoin as key innovations that change the way individuals manage money, credit and investments.
stablecoins bring U.S. dollars to the chain
Armstrong recently elaborated on how stablecoins-a cryptocurrency pegged to the U.S. dollar-allow people anywhere in the world to hold digital versions of the U.S. dollar without directly relying on traditional banks. He believes this solves significant barriers to accessibility, especially in areas with high inflation or limited banking services. Cryptocurrencies have not received the praise they deserve for the financial access that has been unlocked for the world. stablecoins bring U.S. dollars to the chain, allowing people to send and hold low-inflation currencies at any time, at a cost of just a fraction of a cent.
Stable coins provide users in countries where their legal currencies are unstable as an instant, low-cost way to gain U.S. dollar exposure. As a result, cross-border transfers have become faster and more efficient, bypassing the high costs and delays of traditional international remittances. Armstrong pointed out that anyone with a smartphone and an Internet connection can access a cryptocurrency wallet to interact with the global financial infrastructure, whether or not they participate in the formal banking system. The blockchain network that handles stablecoin transactions can complete settlements in minutes at any time of the day, including weekends and public holidays.
Small Dictionary: stablecoin-a cryptocurrency pegged to stable assets such as the US dollar, designed to minimize price fluctuations and serve as a stable medium of exchange or store of value.
DeFi, Bitcoin and tokenization broaden access channels
Armstrong also highlighted the rise of DeFi, which uses blockchain-based smart contracts to provide open lending and other financial functions without the need for intermediaries. Unlike traditional credit systems, the DeFi protocol allows users to interact directly programmatically, often requiring only collateral in the form of digital assets. DeFi gives anyone access to credit without relying on traditional gatekeepers. At the same time, tokenized assets and Bitcoin provide new ways to save, invest, and preserve wealth beyond the existing financial system.
DeFi replaces traditional requirements such as credit checks and region-based approvals with blockchain-driven transparency and global coverage. However, most DeFi lending platforms require collateral rather than relying on credit history. Armstrong also mentioned Bitcoin, describing it as an asset with limited supply and a very different monetary policy from a country's currency that is vulnerable to inflation. For some, Bitcoin is an alternative store of value outside the mainstream banking system.
He further discussed tokenized stocks-blockchain-based representation of equity assets. These digital versions would make it easier for a wider range of investors to participate in global capital markets, including through partial ownership, as long as they follow relevant regulations.
Dictionary: Tokenization-Converting rights to assets (such as company shares or real estate) into digital tokens on the blockchain, making them easier to trade and divide.
Armstrong acknowledged that despite significant progress in cryptocurrency infrastructure, the industry is still grappling with issues such as regulation, custody and smart contract-related risks, liquidity gaps, and consumer protection.
