Solana was close to final stop after a Teraswitch failure, with 29% of pledges offline
A Teraswitch routing failure resulted in 28.83% of pledges SOL offline, leaving Solana only 4.51 percentage points short of its final stop threshold. About 90 validators in Europe and Asia were affected, and more than 133 million SOLs were temporarily offline. Affected validators lost approximately 333 SOL rewards, prompting Marinade to re-evaluate ASN and data center concentration risks.
On Thursday, Solana was only 4.51 percentage points shy of the final stop threshold after a routing failure at Teraswitch resulted in 28.83% of pledged SOLs offline. The failure affected approximately 90 validators in Europe and Asia, while 94% of pledges on AS20326 were also offline. According to Marinade Finance, traffic resumed at 04:16:15 UTC.
Teraswitch routing failure affects multiple sites
According to Marinade, Teraswitch advertised a default route from its Miami site without attaching routing attributes. A route reflector in Amsterdam then propagates the route to sites in Europe and Asia. The edge router treats this route as a local route and takes precedence over a valid default route. However, Teraswitch's core equipment refused to consider the route valid, resulting in the inability of 12 sites to use the available path. The sites affected include London, Amsterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt, Singapore and Tokyo. According to Marinade, the same problem did not occur at the North American site.
Teraswitch discovered the problem within 10 minutes. Traffic resumed at 04:16:15 UTC, while the Miami site remained disconnected from the backbone during further inspections.
More than 133 million SOLs were offline
Marinade found that 118.89 million SOLs were held on AS20326, accounting for 27.34% of the total online pledge. About 94% of these pledges were offline during the event. An additional 14.1 million SOLs are offline on Latitude.sh, Limestone, Butterfly Research and Allnodes. Marinade was unable to determine whether these faults were related. 59 validators held 80.2 million SOLs and were back online within the same narrow recovery window. Marinade said these validators did not fail over before routing was restored.
Verifier lost 333 SOL rewards
Solana's second-largest verifier Helius stayed offline for the entire 33 minutes. Among the 74 validators measured by Marinade, Laine, Cogent Crypto, SOL Strategies and Lion3d have recovered cleanly. Marinade said four ASNs hold two-thirds of their allocated pledges, of which AS395201 alone holds 36.94%. The 90 affected validators lost approximately 333 SOL rewards, which will be covered by validator bonds at the end of the cycle.
Marinade plans to review concentration limits by ASN and data center, and plans to publish whether verifiers use hot-plug and automatic failover systems.
