Federal Reserve Hamack urges immediate interest rate hikes, cryptocurrency markets and stock markets

Key insight:

The crypto market has become the focus as Beth Hammack supports immediate interest rate hikes and believes that current policies have failed to adequately curb economic activity.

The producer price index (PPI) rose 4.7% year-on-year in July, lower than the expected 4.9% and down from 5.5% in June.

Bitcoin is trading close to US$63,616, and the market is evaluating Hamak's hawkish stance.

Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Beth Hamack reiterated his call for the United States to raise interest rates immediately. Her stance has once again made monetary policy the focus of attention in the crypto market and U.S. stocks.

Hamack believes that current borrowing conditions are not enough to inhibit the economy because inflation is still above the Fed's 2% target. At the same time, producer inflation cooled more than economists expected in July, sending a very different signal to policymakers and markets.

Crypto market becomes focus, Hamack calls for interest rate hikes

Hamack stated her policy stance on Thursday at an event at the Dayton, Ohio Area Chamber of Commerce, according to Bloomberg. She said business activity still showed strong demand for financing, lending, investment and expansion.

According to Hamack, companies are still discovering growth opportunities and have not reported substantial pressures from current interest rates. As a result, she believes monetary policy needs to be tightened further to bring inflation down to the Fed's 2% target.

Hamack also expressed concern about allowing inflation to remain above target for years to come. She previously issued a similar hawkish policy assessment in an interview with Yahoo Finance on Monday.

In that interview, Hamak said that current interest rates did not impose substantial restrictions on economic activity. She also called for an unspecified number of additional rate hikes.

It is worth noting that Hamack believes that a 25-basis point rate hike will have limited impact on the overall economy. So if policymakers follow her preferred path, her remarks suggest multiple adjustments may be needed.

U.S. producer inflation cooled in July

However, Thursday's producer inflation report provided policymakers with more moderate inflation data. The U.S. producer price index was flat month-on-month in July.

U.S. producer price index (PPI) data

The market is expected to increase 0.2% month-on-month. At the same time, June data was revised to a decline of 0.1%.

Annual producer inflation also slowed in July. PPI rose 4.7% year-on-year, compared with 5.5% in June.

Economists expect a year-on-year growth of 4.9%. As a result, both monthly and annual producer inflation were lower than market expectations.

PPI data follows Wednesday's consumer price index report. Together, these data juxtapose the decline in producer inflation with Hamak's argument that policy tightening is still needed for headline inflation.

Crypto markets and stocks face interest rate scenarios

At the same time, Hamak's preferred policy path provides financial markets with a clear interest rate scenario. If policymakers adopt her stance, the Fed will raise its policy rate.

This scenario will put Bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies and stocks into a higher interest rate environment. Markets will evaluate each rate hike based on upcoming inflation data and economic activity.

Another scenario is that policymakers may focus more on cooling producer inflation before changing interest rates. July PPI data has shown that monthly and annual price growth is weaker than market expectations.

The third scenario could combine additional inflation data with ongoing debate among Fed officials. Hamak's remarks established the hawkish side of the discussion, while the July PPI provided new evidence of easing producer pressure.

For the crypto market, real-time data shows small but different price changes for major assets. As of this writing, Bitcoin is trading at above $63,600 and Ethereum is below $1,900. Meanwhile, XRP is close to $1.01, Solana is trading at close to $75.95, and BNB is around $608.20.
