The Ethereum Foundation is abandoning the use of the Poseidon hash function in its planned post-quantum architecture, according to researcher Justin Drake. On Thursday, Drake said the foundation had decided to move away from Poseidon and switch to proven alternatives such as SHA or BLAKE. A hash function is a technique that converts data into a fixed digital fingerprint, allowing a computer to verify whether information has been tampered with.
Poseidon has previously been considered for future post-quantum systems, such as leanVM, which is designed to help Ethereum efficiently verify a large number of blockchain activities. But these systems are not yet available on the main network.
Drake points out that advances in SNARK, a compact proof for confirmation calculations without repeating the underlying work, have made traditional hash functions performance sufficient to replace Poseidon in these planned systems.
He said that production-ready leanVM is targeted for completion in 2027 and will subsequently be deployed to Ethereum's consensus, data and execution layers in 2028. These time nodes are still preliminary planning.
Sreeram Kannan, founder and CEO of Eigen Labs, said that hash-based systems have fewer known attack paths than other post-quantum solutions and can be deployed faster because they have been reviewed for years. Kannan said joint research work with the foundation and zero-knowledge certification company Succect has increased the speed of certification by 2.5 times.
