The Ethereum Foundation abandons the Poseidon hash function and switches to mature encryption algorithms

According to researcher Justin Drake, the Ethereum Foundation has decided to abandon the use of the Poseidon hash function in subsequent quantum security strategies and instead focus on long-proven encryption schemes such as SHA and BLAKE.

Moving from Poseidon to mature algorithms

Drake said that the foundation has previously evaluated the use of Poseidon for upcoming post-quantum systems, including leanVM, an advanced virtual machine design designed to efficiently verify large-scale blockchain transactions. However, he pointed out that recent technological advances mean that original plans involving Poseidon will no longer be moved forward.

Drake emphasized that improvements in SNARK (a concise proof that verifies the result without having to re-perform a full calculation) technology have enabled classical hash functions to behave as efficiently as Poseidon in these future systems.

Poseidon was originally designed to be compatible with zero-knowledge proofs and was once seen as a core candidate for the next generation of cryptographic infrastructure. But now Ethereum will move to SHA or BLAKE based architectures, both of which benefit from extensive academic review and decades of practical application experience.

Kannan added that joint research with the Ethereum Foundation and Succinct, a company focusing on zero-knowledge proof technology, has increased the speed of proof by 2.5 times.

This collaboration demonstrates that mainstream blockchain platforms are accelerating their move towards post-quantum security readiness, focusing on using reliable and well-tested encryption tools.

In terms of hash function comparison: Poseidon is mainly used for zero-knowledge proof of efficiency, and has medium security maturity. It has previously performed well in terms of SNARK performance, but has now been matched by other solutions; SHA/BLAKE is used for general cryptographic security, with high security maturity, and current performance is suitable for SNARK integration.

According to Kannan, adopting mature hashing algorithms such as SHA and BLAKE can reduce attack vectors and accelerate the deployment of future Ethereum encryption standards.

Improvements in cryptographic proof technology allow existing hash functions to provide the efficiency needed for large-scale blockchain verification, eliminating the need to rely on more experimental options.
