OpenAI launches ChatGPT service for teenagers, adding new security protection and learning tools

OpenAI launched the ChatGPT service for teenagers on August 18, adding stricter security defaults, educational tools and parental control features for users under the age of 18.

Core Points

ChatGPT Youth Edition will be automatically enabled when a user states that they are between 13 and 17 years old, or when the OpenAI system estimates that they are under 18 years old.

This version adds "study time", homework reminders, quizzes and learning visualization functions based on the "learning mode".

The release comes as OpenAI and other technology companies face increasing legal and regulatory pressure over youth safety issues.

ChatGPT Youth Security Measures

According to an OpenAI announcement, this new experience will be automatically applied to users who declare themselves between 13 and 17 years old, or who are determined by the system to be under 18 years old. This release is one of OpenAI's broad initiatives to customize ChatGPT for younger users.

This product combines existing "learning models" with homework reminders, quizzes, learning visualization, and "learning duration" functions. Among them,"learning duration" allows teenagers or parents to choose the default period for activating the learning mode. OpenAI said the system is designed to guide students to solve problems step by step rather than giving answers directly.

Safety measures also cover self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and explicit sexual content or violent images. At the same time, associated parent accounts can set "silent time" and manage some settings. OpenAI said: "Adolescents should be able to use artificial intelligence to learn, create and explore," while emphasizing that access rights should include age-appropriate protections.

OpenAI faces security review

This release comes as technology companies face increasing scrutiny about the impact of digital products on children and teenagers. Meta is facing a pilot lawsuit filed by 29 state attorneys general accusing it of promoting addictive behavior among young users, with reports that potential damages could reach hundreds of billions of dollars.

OpenAI itself is facing legal and regulatory pressure. Florida Attorney General James Usmail sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman in June, accusing them of deliberately releasing unsafe products. Subsequently, a coalition of state attorneys general reportedly opened a separate investigation.

The Federal Trade Commission also launched an investigation into seven companies, including OpenAI and Meta, in September 2025 to explore the possible negative impact of AI chatbots on children and teenagers. In addition, OpenAI is responding to multiple wrongful death lawsuits that allege ChatGPT contributed to harmful delusions and in some cases led to suicide.

Prior to the release of this youth edition, OpenAI has implemented a series of security improvements over the past year, including parental controls launched in September 2025 and age prediction launched in January 2026. Since then, OpenAI has further expanded its model security protection and learning tools for young people. This new version of the experience is an integrated version of these phased protection measures.
