The competitive situation between the two memory chip industry leaders has attracted widespread attention from financial analysts. JPMorgan's Jay Kwon predicts that SK Hynix may announce more commitments in its third-quarter earnings report, possibly committing an additional shareholder dividend of at least 180 trillion won (approximately US$130 billion) until 2027.
Impact on U.S. shareholders
After deducting previously announced return plans, this estimated amount will account for approximately 50% of the company's projected cumulative free cash flow from 2025 to 2027.
Kwon wrote in the research note: "We cautiously expect that SK Hynix will seek more shareholder returns through a combination of share acquisitions, cancellations and dividends, with a greater focus on special dividends."
U.S. investors holding American Depositary Receipts will receive dividend distribution, but custody fees may reduce the actual amount received. The share repurchase plan has no direct impact on depositary receipt shareholders.
SK Hynix also promised to allocate more than 50% of its free cash flow to investors, which is a slight increase from the previously promised 50% threshold.

In addition to the capital allocation announcement, Reuters disclosed on Friday that SK Hynix is evaluating the construction of a new memory chip production facility in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The total potential investment may reach tens of trillions of won.
