BNB Chain community prepares for Pasteur hard fork
The BNB Chain community is preparing for Pasteur hard fork, which is scheduled to take effect on the BNB Intelligent Chain (BSC) main network on August 25, 2026 at 02:30 UTC. With only two days left before activation, developers have outlined the main upgrades to be introduced in this critical network event.
Key features of Pasteur hard fork
According to the BNB Chain development team, the Pasteur upgrade will focus on a number of new features beyond network speed. It is worth noting that this hard fork brings improvements in bridge verification, verifier key management, and block capacity, aiming to enhance the security and scalability of the BSC.
This upgrade contains three main proposals, collectively referred to as BEP-673. These changes include: a stronger bridge authentication protocol (BEP-682), a secure retirement verifier key (BEP-695), and the introduction of a more complete transaction block (BEP-675) at current speeds.
Developers emphasized that previous hard forks Fermi and Osaka/Mendel prioritized increasing transaction speed and shortening the block time to 0.45 seconds. Based on this, Pasteur upgrades shift their focus to making more efficient use of network speed and solving validator governance issues.
BEP-682 and BEP-695 directly enhance chain security and improve bridging, pledge and governance processes. BEP-675 introduces the ability for block builders to submit pre-execution blocks, and the verifier checks the blocks based on consensus rules before signing and broadcasting. This mechanism aims to more fully fill blocks and improve transaction throughput without affecting network integrity. In the TestNet benchmark, BEP-675 increased transaction processing capabilities from 1237 transactions per second to 2324 transactions per second.
Upgrade overview comparison
Fermi upgrade: Faster exit time, reaching 0.45 seconds/block.
Osaka/Mendel upgrade: Stabilize speed and achieve consistent performance.
Pasteur Upgrade (BEP-673): Focusing on bridging, key rotation and more complete blocks, the testnet TPS has been increased from 1237 to 2324.
The core of Pasteur is to use the increased speed to achieve efficient throughput, introduce stronger bridge verification and more secure validator key retirement, while allowing each block to accommodate more transactions at the same speed.
Activation Schedule and Upgrade Guidelines
Pasteur hard fork has been running on the BSC test network since July 21, 2026. The main network activation is officially scheduled for August 25, 2026 at 02:30 UTC. BNB Chain recommends that node operators update their systems to version 1.7.7 before this deadline to ensure a smooth transition.
BNB Chain is an open source, decentralized blockchain platform that focuses on fast, low-cost transactions and supports applications in the DeFi, NFT and Web3 infrastructure fields. This planned upgrade aims to address network security and operational efficiency issues as part of BNB Chain's strategy to continue to expand throughput and stabilize ecosystem growth.
The path to future expansion
In the first half of 2026, BSC implemented several key scalability measures, such as shortening the block interval to 450 milliseconds and reducing memory finality to 650 milliseconds. These optimizations have nearly doubled benchmark throughput, which is currently close to 5200 transactions per second.
Pasteur hard fork marks the beginning of BNB Chain's roadmap for the second half of 2026, with the clear goal of doubling main-network throughput again and promoting an overall ten-fold increase in transaction capacity. The "capacity workflow" supported by BEP-675 is at the core of achieving this goal and aims to maximize the utilization of available block space and improve the ability to handle high transaction volumes.
Developers say these enhancements are part of a broader effort to ensure that BNB Chain remains competitive when handling large-scale, demanding decentralized applications.
Small Dictionary
BEP (BNB Evolution Proposal) is a technical standard used to propose improvements and changes to the BNB Chain protocol. BEP outlines various upgrades, from governance rules to consensus mechanisms and network infrastructure.
