Bitcoin soared on August 19, and Coinbase became the biggest winner.
On August 19, Bitcoin once rose by 8%, but the real change of the day occurred on Nasdaq: Coinbase shares (COIN) rose by about 11%. In contrast, only more volatile Bitcoin reserve companies such as Strategy and Bitmine performed better, each rising 13%. For reference, Bitcoin closed up 5.8% at $68361 on the day.
There is a logic behind the trading platform's share price rise more than its trading assets: among the three triggers on the day, Coinbase received double gains on each.
Why Coinbase became a leveraged bet for the SEC's policy shift
The August 19 rise was driven by three factors: the U.S. Treasury Department doubled bond repurchase, the SEC's first proposal to develop proprietary token rules, and the White House's cryptocurrency summit-Coinbase representatives sat with SEC Chairman Paul Atkins and CFTC Chairman Mike Selig.
For Coinbase, all three are directly beneficial to its business model:
Increased liquidity means increased trading volume. Coinbase profits from every transaction. Rising prices and increased trading volume directly drove core revenue. On August 19 alone, Bitcoin's transaction volume reached US$36.5 billion in 24 hours.
Clear token rules mean more products. The SEC's proposal would increase the annual token-based financing cap to $75 million and exempt it from full application of securities regulations. Every project that legally enters the U.S. market based on this is a potential listing target, and listing is Coinbase's raw material.
Participation in decision-making means predictability. For years, the SEC has been Coinbase's largest source of litigation risk. When the same regulator started making rules rather than filing lawsuits, and its chairman sat at a table with Coinbase management at the White House, the regulatory risk premium borne by the stock naturally fell. The market eliminated this premium on August 19.
The background is also worthy of attention: the 11% increase in a single day also measures its possible decline. COIN is still a leveraged bet on crypto activity, with both ups and downs, while the SEC proposal is currently only a proposal, not a law.
What Coinbase's rise means for you as a user
You benefit from the platform's rise not only as a shareholder, but also as a user-provided you choose the right product level. Coinbase is awarded the EU MiCA license through its Luxembourg entity and is the first German company to hold a BaFin crypto escrow license; it is also one of the widest variety of tokens on regulated exchanges. An overview of the three levels is as follows:
Core (Standard Coinbase application)
Suitable for beginners and casual purchasers. The easiest to operate, supports savings plans, but has the highest cost per transaction.
Coinbase Advanced
Suitable for active traders. Order books, limit orders and stop loss orders are provided with significantly reduced fees and can be activated for free in the account.
Coinbase One (subscription version)
Ideal for frequent traders and savings plan users. After subscription, transaction fees will be waived according to the terms and conditions, and additional functions will be added; you can refund your subscription when the transaction volume reaches a certain level.
(Detailed descriptions of each level have been written separately, and specific guidance is omitted here.)

Coinbase Stock FAQ
Why did Coinbase stock rise today?
COIN rose by approximately 11% on August 19, 2026. Driving factors include: a market rally triggered by the U.S. Treasury's doubling of bond buybacks, the SEC's new token rule formulation proposal, and Coinbase's participation in the White House cryptocurrency conference.
Does Coinbase stock always rise with Bitcoin prices?
The two are highly correlated but have a leveraged effect: COIN relies on trading volume and the regulatory environment, so its volatility is usually greater than Bitcoin, and in both directions.
What does Coinbase One offer?
This is a subscription service with no transaction fees based on the terms. If you trade or save frequently, it will recoup costs; for users who buy occasionally, a lower-cost Coinbase Advanced is usually enough.
Is Coinbase regulated in Germany?
Coinbase obtains MiCA licenses through its Luxembourg entity, so it can provide services within the EU; the company previously held its first BaFin crypto escrow license in Germany.
