Bitcoin faces a new round of selling pressure: retail investors reduce their holdings, whales continue to attract funding

Bitcoin has once again encountered selling pressure after soaring to about US$81,500 recently. The latest data shows that small holders are reducing their exposure, while large bitcoin wallets continue to increase their holdings of the asset.

There is a clear divergence between retail investors and whale investors

Recent online data shows that there is a clear divergence between retail investors and whale investors in the Bitcoin market. Data cited by crypto analyst Ali Charts pointed out that Bitcoin prices climbed about 31% in the latest round of gains, rising from US$62,229 to about US$81,500 in a short period of time. However, wallets holding 0.1 to 1 BTC had an accumulation trend score of only-0.982, indicating that these holders were distributing rather than accumulating bitcoins during this period.

In contrast, according to the same analysis, investors holding at least 100 BTC are actively accumulating. In the past 60 days, wallets holding more than 10,000 BTC have added 46,420 BTC positions, highlighting the institutional and whale support in the market.

Wallets holding more than 10,000 BTC have increased their holdings by 46,420 BTC in the past 60 days, indicating that large investors continue to accumulate while small holders are shrinking their exposure.

Small Dictionary: Cumulative trend score-an on-chain indicator used to measure whether a specific wallet group is a net buyer (positive score) or a net seller (negative score) over a specific period of time.

Institutional demand remains strong

Despite price fluctuations, institutional demand for Bitcoin remains an important driving force. In the seven trading days ending August 27, the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF recorded a capital inflow of US$2.5 billion, its strongest performance since October. The surge in ETF activity suggests that institutional investors are increasing their exposure to this leading cryptocurrency even as market volatility continues.

Holder Types -- Recent Activities -- Trends
Retail (0.1-1 BTC)--Distribution (Score-0.982)--Reduced exposure
Whales (100+ BTC)--Accumulate--Increase in positions
ETF inflows--US$2.5 billion in 7 trading days--The strongest

Technical outlook and key prices since October

The current Bitcoin trading price is approximately US$77,671, and the 24-hour trading volume is approximately US$77.15 billion. The market value is approximately US$1.56 trillion. Bitcoin's dominant rate is 59.62%, down approximately 2.06% in the past 24 hours.

In its recent decline, Bitcoin fell below the support level of US$76,449 on the 30-minute chart. Market analysts warned that if it continues to weaken and falls below this level, Bitcoin could fall to US$74,000; if it falls further, it could hit regional order blocks of US$70,000 to US$71,200. This shift suggests a short-term correction rather than a reversal of the overall trend.

The key level of bullish momentum was identified as US$77,184. If Bitcoin can close firmly above that threshold, it may regain its lost ground and is expected to recover to $78,000 or higher. Conversely, if a continuous drop below $74,000, it may test support around $71,200 before buyers try to rebound again.

If Bitcoin can hold on to US$74,000 and recover US$77,184, buying interest may quickly return to the market. However, if selling pressure continues, Bitcoin could re-test support between $70,000 and $71,200 before a meaningful rebound could occur.

Previously, Bitcoin briefly broke through US$80,000 on August 25, hitting a high of approximately US$81,238, and then fell back. The $80,000 to $82,000 area remains an important resistance range, indicating that bulls need stronger momentum to break through this level.
