Morpho returns online after AWS failure caused service disruption

Morpho confirmed that its web applications and APIs were back online after a partial outage blamed on an Amazon CloudFront failure. The Amazon outage knocked down the second-largest online lending network after Aave for several hours, during which time borrowers and lenders were unable to access app.morpho.org and the api.morpho.org portal.

Morpho is back online

Morpho's chief engineer Julien Thomas confirmed that the loan agreement was back online after initially reporting an AWS CloudFront issue that caused downtime. Julien wrote: "All Morpho services have been restored and are running stably. Performance may still be affected, but web apps and APIs are back to normal."

Amazon Cloud Services (AWS) also reported this issue on its status page, which roughly coincided with Morpho's downtime. The cloud service provider pointed out that CloudFront customers using VPC Origins encountered 5xx errors between 12:45 and 4:18 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

AWS engineers explained that once the service cluster that handles private VPC source connections reaches the upper internal capacity limit, the system that pushes routing configurations to the AWS network processor cannot correctly load the updated data.

CloudFront is Amazon's Content Delivery Network that routes network traffic to website servers. The core function of this failure, VPC Origins, is a relatively new option that allows customers to provide application services behind a private Load Balancer without exposing the back-end infrastructure to the public network.

The company said the issue has now been resolved.

Who was affected by AWS downtime?

Amazon reported that a 5xx erroneous outage affected CloudFront customers using VPC Origins. Like Morpho users, players on the AI platform Hugging Face, the British National Lottery, and Bethesda's Fallout 76 cannot access it normally.

Tradesea trading platform said it had to launch a temporary solution to keep the web platform online and limit downtime to mobile applications.

This outage is the most recent event that caused the service interruption of the encryption platform. Just in May of this year, Coinbase was paralyzed due to "multiple cooler failures in the AWS data center causing overheating of the computer room."

Affected and unaffected parts

This outage affected Morpho's managed interface, not its on-chain contracts, a critical distinction.

Morpho, an online lending network that connects lenders and borrowers, reported deposits of more than $11 billion in June when it completed a $175 million financing (co-led by Paradigm, a16z crypto and Ribbit). According to DeFiLlama data, the total value of Morpho's current lockups is approximately US$7.33 billion, mainly distributed on the Ethereum and Base chains.

Neither Morpho nor AWS have released complete incident reports describing the impact of CloudFront failures on specific users. Julien pointed out that even if service is restored, performance may still degrade, so users should pay attention to formal review reports and not assume a full recovery until confirming that the transaction is settled as expected.
