Dave Brown, senior vice president of Amazon Web Services, is leaving after nearly 19 years in the job and will join Meta Platforms within weeks.

Brown's new role will report to Santosh Janardhan, head of infrastructure, with a focus on expanding data center operations.

Mark Zuckerberg said at a shareholders meeting in May that cloud computing services are still under serious consideration.

Meta has allocated US$125 billion to US$145 billion this year for capital expenditures, mainly for artificial intelligence data centers.

This recruitment is in line with Meta's grand "Meta Compute" strategy, which aims to achieve hundreds of gigawatts of computing power.

Meta Platforms (META) shares fell 5.40% after reports that the social media giant successfully recruited another top infrastructure executive from Amazon.

Dave Brown, who serves as senior vice president of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and was selected to Amazon's prestigious S-team, will leave the e-commerce giant at the end of July after nearly two decades in the job. He expects to transition to Meta in the coming weeks.

Brown will report directly to Santosh Janardhan, head of Meta Infrastructure, focusing on accelerating the company's data center construction plans. AWS chief Matt Garman announced Brown's departure through internal communication on Wednesday, but he did not disclose the executive's future employer.

Meta chose not to provide official reviews.

This strategic appointment comes as Meta accelerates its cloud computing ambitions. At the annual shareholders 'meeting in May, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that establishing a cloud services division was "definitely under consideration."

Zuckerberg revealed that companies contact Meta "almost every week" to express interest in accessing its artificial intelligence models or pay a premium for unused computing resources.

"We haven't pursued this yet because we think there is a computing need internally, but obviously if we determine we have excess capacity, then this will be a viable option,"Zuckerberg explained.

Understanding Meta Compute: The strategic vision that drives recruitment

In January this year, Zuckerberg announced an executive-level plan called Meta Compute that aims to build hundreds of gigawatts of computing power over the long term.

Janardhan co-leads the program with Daniel Gross, who joined Meta in 2025. Dina Powell McCormick was appointed president and vice chairman in January, focusing on building government partnerships to develop international data centers.

Meta has also hired two former OpenAI infrastructure leaders as part of this strategy.

Brown is the latest member of a series of important infrastructure recruitments by Meta to accelerate AI development and gain computing power at scale.

Huge financial commitments support infrastructure plan

Meta has committed to allocate US$125 billion to US$145 billion in capital expenditures throughout 2025, a large portion of which will be used for AI-focused data centers.

This spending scale puts Meta alongside Amazon and Microsoft as one of the world's largest investors in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

For reference, AWS generated quarterly revenue of US$37.6 billion in the first quarter of 2026, a year-on-year increase of 28%-this is the division Brown is leaving.

Brown's nearly two-decade career at AWS has covered overseeing key operational areas of the cloud division, making him one of the most experienced infrastructure leaders in the technology industry.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Meta was developing a Cloud Services business that aims to monetize excess computing power-a strategic move directly aimed at the enterprise cloud market currently dominated by AWS.
