A day after taking over Coinbase's trading products and Base App, the new head did not choose to follow the script
Instead, Cobie gave a straightforward internal diagnosis that most exchange executives would avoid in public. He said Coinbase has long been estranged from native users of cryptocurrencies. This assessment was made in response to the question "How can Base Apps attract users on the chain after ecosystem trust is compromised?" Cobie emphasized that he is not responsible for the Base Network itself, but only for the application and trading products. But for users who view Coinbase and Base as the same interface, the distinction is almost irrelevant. The statement comes as the exchange is facing multiple fronts of regulation, market structure and internal credibility. A series of last-minute bank lobbying actions against a landmark Senate crypto bill has reinforced the perception that centralized platforms can no longer move forward based on brand power alone.
Loss of trust impacts Coinbase and Base at the same time
Cobie did not whitewash the extent of the damage. He said both Coinbase and Base had severely eroded user trust through a series of avoidable missteps, including what he called the "events of the day." The specific nature of the incident is not clearly stated within the exchange, but this series of incidents points to a deeper pattern of operational failures that alienate real users who build and trade on the chain. Losing this user base is costly. Native users drive usage, mobility, and verifier interest. When they turn elsewhere, the network effect weakens. This is a long-term structural problem. Coinbase's listing, building an institutional custody business, and pursuing regulatory clarity-all of which have brought in capital but also eroded its appeal to the user base that originally gave the exchange influence. At the same time, platforms such as Sui are attracting institutional pledge demand and achieving fintech integration, which has given it a one-day gain of 18%, demonstrating that native participation and institutional funding are not a trade-off that must be made for all projects. The challenge for Coinbase is that it must now win back the user base it has quietly lost while still adhering to the regulated infrastructure it has built.
What changes Cobie plans to make
His solution sounds surprisingly simple: Listen more closely to users on the chain and build the products they really want to use. This may mean stripping away layers added for compliance or convenience that frustrates developers and traders accustomed to direct protocol interactions. Whether this will translate into faster Base App iterations, reduced obstacles to asset bridging, or a different fee structure is unclear. The timing is very delicate. On-chain activity is tending to tokenize real-world assets, the RWA market size has exceeded US$20 billion, and institutional clearing has become weekly headlines. If Coinbase fails to reignite the enthusiasm of native users, it could become a custodian that handles regulated tokenized assets, while the permission-free side of the cryptocurrency flows elsewhere. Cobie's initial comments suggested he knew that time was running out. No product roadmap has yet been announced, and the scale of the trust gap means no single update can resolve it. For now, it's worth noting that someone inside Coinbase has publicly said this. In an industry where public statements usually dispel any suspected doubts, the admission is a signal in itself. Still, empty talk is not helpful. Users on the chain have heard apologies before. The question is whether Cobie's product decisions-starting with the Base App-can match the directness of its diagnosis. The first test will be the products launched in the next few weeks and whether the exchange can retain native developers from finding another chain that feels like it was built for them, rather than just the compliance department.
