Veteran Ripple developer regrets selling XRP

David Schwartz, honorary chief technology officer of Ripple Labs and one of the founding architects of XRPLedger, has one regret: selling XRP. On January 29, 2026, a cryptocurrency user asked him if he regretted selling when XRP was $0.10 and Ethereum (ETH) was $1. About six months later, Schwartz responded: "Obviously, I wish I hadn't done those things. But my wife and I agreed to sell every time the price hit a record high, and I really hate risk. I wish I could be more risk-tolerant, but I'm not that kind of person."

The senior Ripple developer said he is risk-averse and because of an agreement with his wife, he sells every time his cryptocurrency holdings reach a record high (ATH). Schwartz added that while he wished he was more willing to take risks, he was essentially a risk averse.

XRP is the sixth largest cryptocurrency with a market value of US$71.16 billion. The cryptocurrency hits new historical highs every few years. In January 2018, during the peak period of cryptocurrency, XRP reached $3.40, and then fell back to its previous low. Although the peak in 2021 is not as strong as it was in 2018, XRP hit $1.84 again in April 2021. On July 17, 2025, XRP hit a record high of $3.65, when its regulatory status in the United States was almost settled. But a few months later, on October 10, the cryptocurrency flash crash caused prices to fall, and the currency has not yet recovered. In the past 24 hours, XRP prices have risen 3.7% to trading at $1.14.
