Uber backs Travis Kalanick's Atoms in $1.7 billion robot financing round

Travis Kalanick's robot company Atoms completed a $1.7 billion equity financing on Wednesday, backed by the Anderson Horowitz Fund. The investment is one of the largest single investments in the 2026 financing boom in the physical artificial intelligence sector, which has attracted record capital this year.

Uber Investment founder

Anderson Horowitz Fund, who was forced to leave, will lead the investment, and its partner Ben Horowitz will join the Atoms board of directors. New investors in this round of equity financing include Bain Capital, Fifth Wall, Chemistry, A*, K5 Global, Abstract, SV Angel and Alpha Square Group.

Uber, a company co-founded by Kalanick, also participated in the investment round. It has been nearly ten years since Uber's board of directors forced him to resign as CEO in 2017. The reasons for his expulsion at the time involved complaints of sexual harassment, discrimination and workplace culture issues.

But Kalanick sees the deal as a settlement-not just with Uber. He wrote on the X platform that he almost reached a partnership with Mark Anderson and Ben Horowitz in 2011. "In 2017, Uber paid the price for failing to get Mark on the board-if you understand, you will understand." He wrote.

Debt partners (including five banks) are listed separately from equity financing. These banks are Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and Barclays. The exact size of any loan line has not been disclosed.

Atoms is a holding company. Kalanick superimposed it on the two companies he founded after leaving Uber: Ghost kitchen business CloudKitchens, and heavy industry automation company Pronto, which he acquired from former Uber colleague Anthony Lewandowski in March 2026.

The combined company will be divided into three segments: Atoms Food, Atoms Mining and Atoms Transport. These businesses focus on food production, mining and heavy transportation.

Kalanick said in a post on Platform X that Atoms is an original equipment manufacturer that manufactures "atom-based computers." He called the funding "fuel to complete the arc of the story from bit to atom-we started at Uber, continued at CloudKittens, and now will end at Atoms."

Horowitz is more straightforward. "Travis is back." He wrote. He explained that machines designed for specific uses, rather than humanoid robots, are best suited to heavy industry. "Dedicated machines are more suitable for most of this type of work." He wrote and attributed the advantages to improved productivity. "Repeat what Uber did in transportation, or what computers did in the digital world: Make everything and everyone more efficient." He said this is the best application of artificial intelligence and robotics.

Robot financing sets record, but Atoms keeps silent on specific numbers

Money is pouring into robots that can operate in the real world. As of early June 2026, the total global financing in the robotics sector reached US$55.8 billion, almost double the previous record for the whole year.

The day before Atoms announced funding news, British startup Humanoid completed a $152 million financing at a valuation of $1.35 billion. On July 16, Grid Dynamics announced a physical artificial intelligence cooperation with Doosan Robot. The deal shows the industry is moving from the financing stage to the deployment stage.

Artificial intelligence models also show development speed. Mistral reportedly released Robostral Navigation on July 8. This 8-billion-parameter system can control the robot with just a single camera and natural language instructions. In a simulated environment, the system achieved a score of 76.6% on the R2R-CE unknown benchmark.

Kalanick elaborated on his vision in a post on Platform X. Atoms has not disclosed post-investment valuations, has not released any debt data, nor has it provided any business progress data for its food, mining or transportation businesses.
