Brazil's B3 Exchange completes the first tokenized cow mortgage loan transaction
Brazil's B3 Exchange officially registered the first loan business using tokenized cows as collateral, marking the entry of agricultural finance into a new stage. The pilot financing scale is 100,000 Brazilian reais and is guaranteed by 10 cows, laying the foundation for future livestock mortgage loans in the region.
Breakthrough in the tokenization of collateral in the agricultural sector
The cows involved in the transaction came from Engenho Velho Farm in Paraná, Brazil, a state known for its high agricultural yields. Brazilian investment agency Target FIDC coordinated the financing and completed the collateral registration process in the country's main equity and over-the-counter market B3.
The total market valuation of this batch of cows is approximately 120,000 reais. B3 's official records directly link each cow with the corresponding loan document, building a transparent ownership and mortgage chain.
The program uses digital authentication technology and continuous monitoring systems provided by Cowmed, a startup focusing on smart agricultural equipment. Each cow received a unique digital signature and wore a smart collar powered by artificial intelligence to ensure that collateral was verifiable and traceable in real time during the loan period.
AI smart collars improve credit reliability
Smart collars worn by cows continue to collect data on health, location and behavioral patterns. This information will be entered into B3 's secure digital registration system, strengthening the verification standards and asset integrity of agricultural credit.
Previously, Brazilian banks and lenders faced difficulties in confirming the ownership and health of livestock collateral, resulting in conservative valuations and limited credit lines for farmers. Today, continuous digital monitoring allows lenders to more accurately assess the value of livestock and minimize operational risks during the loan period.
Continuous tracking enabled by AI collars significantly improves asset certification and provides lenders with the latest information on the livestock for each loan. In the event of livestock deaths, farmers can quickly digitally change collateral without having to interrupt contracts, and additional livestock can be added to strengthen loan agreements.
Potential to reshape the agricultural loan landscape
This model is expected to provide Brazilian farmers with more working capital, allowing them to invest in equipment, pay for operating costs and respond to seasonal demand. Each animal obtains a separate digital identity in the B3 system, ensuring transparency and preventing the risk of the same asset being collateralized twice.
Cowmed currently tracks approximately 100,000 cows on more than 1000 farms in Brazil and neighboring countries. The total value of livestock monitored through the Cowmed platform is estimated to exceed R $2 billion. The cooperative agency believes that up to 20% of participating farms can use livestock mortgages, resulting in a tokenized dairy mortgage loan scale of up to 400 million reais on B3.
The deployment of tokenized livestock collateral represents a broader transformation of asset tokenization-financial institutions are seeking to represent physical assets in a secure digital form to enhance risk management and transparency. B3 combines real-time agricultural intelligence with digital certification to create a more stable financing environment for Brazil's animal husbandry industry.
