Cryptocurrency payment company MoonPay adds new payment method
Cryptocurrency payment company MoonPay announced on July 23 that it will add Discover Network credit card payment options in the U.S. market. Users can now use these credit cards to purchase and sell cryptocurrencies.
Discover has become the third largest U.S. credit card network supported by the platform, previously integrating Visa and Mastercard. In addition to bank transfers and regional payment channels, MoonPay also supports multiple payment methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Venmo.
Discover has been on the margins of the cryptocurrency space for years. Compared with Visa and Mastercard, it has less cryptocurrency-related transactions, which have been cooperating with cryptocurrency companies for many years.
Some cryptocurrency platforms have previously supported Discover cards, including CEX.IO and BitPay cryptocurrency market partner Sardine. MoonPay's announcement is more specific-it covers comprehensive support for the Discover Network payment channel, which handles transaction flows between cardholders and merchants.
This change means MoonPay will open its service to eligible credit cards under the network. However, not all cards can be used for cryptocurrency transactions, and the final decision lies with the issuing bank. Each bank will formulate its own allowed trading rules.
Why does MoonPay continue to increase payment options
Richard Harrison, who is in charge of banking and payment partnerships at MoonPay, said that each additional payment method reduces the reason for users to abandon transactions at checkout. "Every time we add a payment method, we eliminate one reason why users are reluctant to complete a transaction," he said."MoonPay is built on a simple principle: Every payment method people have should be able to be used in cryptocurrency. We are making Discover Network cardholders able to purchase cryptocurrency the same way they pay for any other item."
This follows a major change in Discover ownership. Capital One Financial completed its $35 billion acquisition of Discover Financial Services in 2025, a transaction originally announced in February 2024. In addition, Capital One also acquired financial technology company Brex for US$5.15 billion in April 2026, which supports stablecoin payments.
The development history of MoonPay
MoonPay was established in 2019 and is committed to helping individuals and companies realize the conversion of funds between legal currency and digital assets. The company claims to have more than 30 million users worldwide and serves more than 500 corporate customers in the cryptocurrency and fintech sectors.
The company is also involved in artificial intelligence. In early 2026, MoonPay launched MoonPay Agents, an unmanaged system for AI-driven cryptocurrency transactions that allows AI agents to create wallets and execute transactions independently.
MoonPay's investors include Tiger Global Management and Coatue. Celebrity investors Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton also participated in the investment. In 2021, the company completed US$555 million in Series A financing, with a valuation of US$3.4 billion. In 2025, MoonPay received a $200 million revolving credit line from Galaxy. At the time, the company said it had achieved profitability and positive cash flow in 2024, with net income increasing by 112% year-on-year.
