FollowingOpenAI introduces GPT-Live voice mode to ChatGPT desktop apps
OpenAI has added its GPT-Live voice mode to ChatGPT desktop apps and rolled it globally to users of five subscription plans on macOS and Windows platforms.

On the same day, Anthropic also launched its own voice upgrade, adding Opus and Sonnet models to Claude.
ChatGPT voice access to macOS and Windows
The company launched the update on Thursday and also covers Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise subscriptions on both major operating systems. Release notes state that the feature can run on Chat, Work and Codex threads. Users can start tasks by voice and then ask the assistant to start, review, or guide work that has been done elsewhere.
On macOS, a feature called Appshots allows apps to read the window the user is currently focusing on, including alternative text. Voice mode also leverages computer skills, local files and plug-ins, and connects to Codex from the iPhone via paired remote access, although the company said Android support is not yet here.

Guinness Chen posted on the X platform saying that GPT-Live makes conversations come alive, while Codex "gives it the power to act." He said he had been using the feature for several weeks and was unwilling to work in any other way. In a demonstration video, the company showed a developer using a voice command to open a thread, submit a pull request, and track down the root cause of the error.
The same update also redesigned local project functionality. A project can now contain multiple related folders, and one of them can be marked as the home folder for new chats, Git operations, and automatic file discovery.
Anthropic responded with Claude's voice tool
Anthropic took action on the same day, upgrading Claude's voice mode to include Opus and Sonnet models. Previously, this feature only worked on its fastest but least capable Haiku model. Claude can now access Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Notion and Canva and request permission before using the tool. Voice conversations are counted into the standard usage limit, and free accounts remain in the Haiku model and can only connect to one application.
The two methods are different. Anthropic leaves its speech stack unchanged, so Claude still listens first, pauses, and then answers. The company pointed out that the core of this release is to enhance intelligence and tool access, rather than changing the way voice is output.
OpenAI removed voice mode from its older Mac apps in December 2025, and desktop clients did not have the feature for several months. GPT-Live launched on mobile phones this month with support for full-duplex conversations, better interrupt handling and CarPlay integration, but it was never designed to perform operations on a mobile phone.
Thursday's release was the first time the model was used with a keyboard, screen and file system.
