BitMEX will be permanently closed on September 23, urging users to withdraw cash as soon as possible.
BitMEX will officially close its cryptocurrency exchange at 04:00 (UTC) on September 23, 2026. Previously, HDR Global Trading Limited completed a strategic business review. The company said that registration of new users has stopped, existing users should close their positions and withdraw assets before closing, and the exchange will conduct the liquidation process in an orderly manner.
Users face closing deadline
According to BitMEX, exchange services will continue until the planned closure time, but trading restrictions will be implemented early. Starting from 04:00 (UTC) on August 26, 2026, users will not be able to open new positions, but they can gradually reduce existing positions until the exchange begins to forcibly liquidate remaining transactions.
BitMEX stated that any positions that remain open at the time of closure will be automatically settled. In addition, contracts with limited liquidity will be processed in advance in accordance with the platform's existing policies. The company also released all pledges of BMEX tokens, which will immediately appear in user accounts.
At the same time, BitMEX encourages users to withdraw cash as soon as possible. Even after operations are over, users can still view account balances and transaction history to complete withdrawals.
Security measures remain in effect
As the shutdown approaches, BitMEX said it will add additional withdrawal reviews to protect users from phishing attacks and fraud. The company warned that there was no so-called "priority withdrawal service" and called on users not to believe any news claiming to provide such a service.
BitMEX also pointed out that blockchain confirmation times (especially on the Bitcoin network) may lead to delays in withdrawals during peak demand periods. Despite this, the exchange stated that user assets remain safe and that its reserves still exceed liabilities under the framework of reserves and proof of liability.
Users who pass KYC verification will be charged a monthly account management fee if they still have funds retained after September 23. The fee is US$50, or the remaining balance is calculated at 1% annualized (whichever is higher).
CZ reviews the legacy of BitMEX
After the announcement, Binance founder Zhao Changpeng (CZ) reviewed the history of BitMEX. He said the exchange created a 100-fold perpetual contract in 2014 and maintains a record of never losing customer funds to hackers.
CZ also mentioned that the BitMEX founder pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act, paid fines and received home confinement. In addition, he believes that the exchange's liquidation process is orderly and recognized Arthur Hayes, while pointing out that users can still withdraw assets.
