Bitcoin OG selling slows down, dormant BTC transfers hit a four-year low: Thorn

Bitcoin dormant address movements hit a new low since the third quarter of 2022

According to data shared by Galaxy Research Director Alex Thorne, the number of Bitcoin dormant address movements in the second quarter of 2025 dropped to its lowest level since the third quarter of 2022. A similar decline was seen in the "currency day destruction" measure of the activity of older currencies.

Thorne said the previous peak was driven by "OG (early investor) profit-taking," a pattern similar to the pattern seen during Bitcoin's 2017 bull market, indicating that the pace of selling has slowed after large allocations by long-term holders in 2024 and 2025.

Sleep address movements track bitcoins that have not been moved for a long time and are later reused. Analysts monitor this indicator because historically increased activity by long-term holders has often been accompanied by increased profit-taking and selling pressures, while low activity can mean that these investors are holding rather than allocating their currencies.
