Zhao Changpeng (CZ) said that acquiring a cryptocurrency exchange may expose buyers to hidden backdoors, security holes and inherited technical risks. His warning came as BitMEX and BitMart announced the suspension of operations, and the consolidation of the cryptocurrency industry continued. CZ pointed out that exchange acquisitions are still possible, but acquirers must conduct thorough technical and security due diligence before the transaction is completed.

CZ highlights security concerns

In response to the recent exchange closures, CZ said that acquiring centralized exchanges requires more caution than other commercial acquisitions. According to him, acquirers could inherit old security weaknesses that went undiscovered during the transaction. He mentioned that hackers may still occur after the acquisition due to backdoors or other problems left by the previous team. However, he also added that despite the increased complexity, acquisitions are still feasible. His comments came as BitMart announced an orderly shutdown, and BitMEX confirmed that it would cease exchange operations on September 23. BitMart also said that users can still withdraw assets during the shutdown process.

BitMart and BitMEX shutdown

The announcements from BitMart and BitMEX have renewed market attention to M & A transactions in the cryptocurrency exchange field. Some companies have chosen to close operations, while others continue to explore expansion through acquisitions. Based on available information, CZ believes that exchange acquisitions require more in-depth technical review than traditional corporate transactions. He pointed out that buyers inherit infrastructure while receiving customers, so security assessments are a key part of any transaction. At the same time, BitMart's closure has sparked further discussions about whether large exchanges will consider acquiring smaller competitors even in the face of these challenges.

Security remains at the heart of acquisition decisions

CZ's warning focuses on operational risks rather than market opportunities. He said companies that are evaluating acquisitions should consider that legacy systems could expose new owners to future security incidents. The comments come at a time when industry consolidation continues and several exchanges have recently closed. Notably, CZ maintains that the acquisition is still feasible, but the company must carefully evaluate inherited technology before completing any transaction. His comments focused on security due diligence as the exchange was considering potential acquisition opportunities based on the latest outage announcement.
