Nvidia and SK Group of South Korea announce more than US$500 billion in AI infrastructure cooperation
Nvidia and SK Group of South Korea announced on July 24 a cooperation worth more than US$500 billion, covering large-scale AI data centers and next-generation memory production, one of the largest single AI infrastructure commitments to date.
The core of this cooperation is Nvidia's long-term agreement with SK Hynix, the world's largest high-bandwidth memory supplier, to ensure the supply of next-generation memory and jointly develop HBM for AI training, AI agents and physical AI applications.(High-bandwidth Memory).
As part of the plan, SK Telecom plans to build a 2 GW AI data center using NVIDIA's Vera Rubin chips and SK Hynix's HBM4 memory. The first facility is expected to be put into production in 2027.
Another agreement: US$1 billion direct investment
In a related but separate initiative, Nvidia directly invested US$1 billion in Naver, South Korea's leading search and Internet company, to fund its AI data center under construction. The funding allows Naver to increase the planned size of the facility from 55 megawatts to more than 200 megawatts, and U.S. private equity firm Brookfield has signed non-binding terms committing up to $9 billion in funding for the project.
Why South Korea and why now?
These announcements coincided with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung's visit to Silicon Valley. Nvidia CEO Renxun Wong described South Korea as entering a "golden age" and pointed out that its semiconductor manufacturing base is a natural choice for AI infrastructure expansion.
The $500 billion amount includes both the memory Nvidia plans to purchase from SK Hynix and SK Group's own purchase of Nvidia supercomputing hardware-which means the figure reflects a two-way trade relationship rather than a one-time investment.
The agreement is directly based on the agreement reached by Nvidia, SK Telecom and SK Hynix in June 2026, which lays the foundation for the construction of multi-gigawatt AI factories across South Korea today.
High-bandwidth memory has become one of the most tense links in the global AI supply chain. SK Hynix's production roadmap is directly aligned with Nvidia's chip release plan, aiming to prevent memory shortages from becoming a bottleneck for future generations of GPUs.
