Coinbase appoints Rob Witoff as chief technology officer
On July 28, Coinbase appointed Rob Witoff as chief technology officer, an early-stage company engineer who will take up a new role as U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges expand AI-assisted product development.
Summary
Coinbase confirmed the leadership change on Tuesday, appointing senior engineer Rob Witoff as chief technology officer.
Witoff first joined Coinbase in 2014 and returned as platform leader in December 2024 after starting a business.
In May this year, Coinbase laid off about 14% of its employees while reorganizing its global team around AI-assisted workflows.
Coinbase's official leadership page now lists Witoff as chief technology officer.
CEO Brian Armstrong announced the appointment on the X platform and praised Witoff for helping Coinbase become "one of the most AI-capable companies in the world." This description is Armstrong's personal evaluation, not an independently measured ranking.
Rob Witoff returns to take on a role that was established early on at Coinbase
Witoff first joined Coinbase in 2014 and worked until 2017. Coinbase said he led the security and infrastructure team, served as chief architect and helped build some of the exchange's earliest systems. He later founded the institutional crypto hosting company Unit410, which was acquired by Coinbase.
Armstrong said on the X platform: "Rob has played a huge role in Coinbase's growth and success, including driving us to become one of the most AI-capable companies in the world. We are very lucky that he has the position of chief technology officer."
Witoff said his interest in Bitcoin began in 2009. He recalled that Coinbase initially supported only one cryptocurrency, used a single codebase, and was run by a small engineering team. The descriptions provide historical background for the new executive, but Coinbase has not independently confirmed every technical detail in its July 27 release.
In December 2024, the company recalled him as the platform leader and executive team member. Witoff said his latest "term" aims to make Coinbase "the best place to build in the world." This remains a forward-looking management goal.
The appointment of Coinbase's chief technology officer coincides with a comprehensive AI reform
The promotion comes amid major changes in the way Coinbase software development and team organization model. In May this year, the company announced plans to lay off about 14%(about 700 positions), while streamlining management and forming a smaller team around AI tools.
Armstrong said AI allows engineers to complete work in days that used to take teams weeks to complete. He also outlined "one-man team" experiments that combine engineering, product and design work into one. The plans describe the operating model Coinbase expects; their long-term impact on output, costs and employee workload has yet to be determined.
Coinbase later stated that almost all newly merged code has become AI-generated and has been manually reviewed. Its July engineering report showed that the proportion increased from 5.7% in the first quarter of 2025 to approximately 100% by mid-2026, while maintaining manual review and compliance controls.
Witoff takes over responsibility for reliability and security
The CTO will be responsible for technical oversight as Coinbase expands derivatives, stablecoin payments, market forecasting and services for AI agents. Each product increases the need for reliable infrastructure, security controls and rapid incident response.
On July 14, Coinbase experienced a service outage of approximately 50 minutes after a regular configuration update affected the shared production cluster. Money transfers, card payments and some on-chain services were affected. The company said customer funds were not at risk and subsequently announced new deployment safeguards and recovery processes.
Witoff's background in security, architecture and platform engineering gives him direct experience in these areas. However, Coinbase did not release new performance targets, budget commitments or separate technology roadmap for this appointment.
Continuous leadership changes at Coinbase
The appointment of the chief technology officer occurred after an executive transition. Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal informed Coinbase on July 8 that he would leave his post on July 31. Molly Abraham is expected to serve as general counsel and company secretary, while Grewal will serve as consultant until October.
It was previously reported that Coinbase's May reorganization placed native AI development at the core of its operating plan. Related reports also mentioned that Coinbase has launched tools that allow authorized AI agents to conduct transactions, payments and perform financial tasks.
Coinbase plans to conduct a quarterly review of its AI key project interview process and conduct 45-day and 90-day evaluations for new employees. Witoff's next test will be whether the company can continue to launch products quickly while maintaining safety, reliability and regulatory control.
