Nigeria's Online Ride-Hailing Drivers 'Union calls for boycott of inDrive platform
Nigeria's App Travel Drivers' Union (AUATON) has called on drivers to stop operating on the inDrive platform, citing "ridiculous" pricing. Comrade Jayyesmi Aziz, chairman of the union's Lagos State Committee, disclosed this information in a statement.
In the statement titled "How inDrive's Low Pricing Destroys the Dignity of Professional Drivers," the chairman pointed out that the problem lies in inDrive's bargaining model, which he believes is unsustainable and poses a threat to drivers.
He pointed out that for years, the model has encouraged passengers to drive down the service value of professional drivers. As a result, the platform does not price trips based on actual operating costs, but lets passengers propose the amount they are willing to pay, which often fails to reflect fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, depreciation, insurance, traffic conditions and driver time costs.
He said that the result of this approach is vicious competition. "This model has gradually changed passenger expectations. Many passengers today believe that they have the right to determine the value of driver labor, and this mentality has spread to the entire online ride-hailing industry." Comrade Aziz said.
The consequences are obvious and serious. Drivers now work longer hours and earn less. Vehicle maintenance has become unaffordable. Many drivers are stuck in debt. Professional standards have been breached. The entire industry is being pushed into an unsustainable pricing dilemma.
However, he also pointed out that the inDrive model can only succeed if the driver allows it. He further warned that drivers who accept inDrive's unsustainable pricing, whether intentionally or unintentionally, are undermining the rights of practitioners across the industry. "If we want to restore professional dignity, we must stop supporting pricing models that continue to drive down prices. Therefore, I call on every professional online ride-hailing driver to carefully consider where they invest their time and energy. Stand together to support fair pricing, reject rates that don't make a living, and stop putting ourselves into poverty." he said.
inDrive insists that its pricing model provides freedom.
InDrive has always insisted that its bidding model gives drivers the right to freely earn income and allows passengers to freely choose their willingness to pay. The company also said that unlike most online ride-hailing platforms, its system allows passengers and drivers to negotiate prices before the start of the journey.
According to the company's Nigeria representative Timothy Oradimeji, the platform has a minimum benchmark that is fair to drivers. He explained that the company's bargaining system prevents exploitation by setting upper and lower limits-both limiting the minimum amount by which passengers can lower prices and the maximum amount by which drivers can increase prices. He said this achieved a balance.
"There is a fair minimum benchmark. Our bargaining system prevents exploitation by setting upper and lower limits-both limiting the minimum amount by which passengers can lower prices and the maximum amount by which drivers can increase prices. Our social listening and driver research show that inDrive has become the balance point between passengers and drivers." Oladimeji said.
He also pointed out that with the balance provided by the platform, drivers can make informed journey choices and passengers can get fair bargaining. Therefore, the platform's bargaining model ensures that supply and demand interact naturally without interference from algorithms.
"Achieving market balance is challenging. Our bargaining model ensures that supply and demand interact naturally without interference from algorithms." said the Nigeria head of inDrive.
