XRP Ledger is about to undergo a major upgrade, with five protocol improvements to support tokenization and institutional finance
XRP Ledger (XRPL) is preparing for its next major software upgrade. Jazzi Cooper, product leader at RippleX, revealed five protocol improvements that will significantly enhance the network's capabilities in tokenization, institutional finance, and real-world asset (RWA) adoption. XRP Ledger's xrpld 3.3.0 version is expected to be released next week. However, like all XRP Ledger protocol changes, the new feature will only be activated after approval by all independent verification nodes through online voting. When Cooper announced the new features on the X platform, he said XRP Ledger has demonstrated its ability to support large-scale tokenized assets and is expanding to support global transfers, transactions, mortgages and settlements. These five improvements include: Confidential MPT, Batch Processing, Permission Delegation, Sponsored Fees and Reserves, and Dynamic MPT. These improvements will improve the network's availability for financial institutions and corporate applications.
This upgrade comes at a time when blockchain networks are increasingly competitive to attract institutional tokenization projects. Financial institutions need to use blockchain technology to tokenize traditional assets such as government bonds, real estate, stocks and private credit to be used for payments and reduce costs.
Confidential MPT brings privacy protection to tokenized assets
One of the most eye-catching additions is the Confidential Multi-Purpose Token (Confidential MPT), which enables privacy features through elliptic curve cryptography and zero-knowledge proof. The improvement allows token issuers and holders to hide balances and transaction amounts, while allowing regulators or auditors to access this information when needed. This feature solves one of the major obstacles preventing financial institutions from adopting public blockchain infrastructure-on which transaction data is often visible to everyone.
Batch processing improves transaction efficiency
Proposed batch processing improvements allow the grouping of multiple transactions involving different accounts into a single atomic operation. This allows complex financial workflows, including payment settlement, to succeed or fail completely, reducing settlement risks and improving the efficiency of institutional transactions and tokenized asset transfers.
Permission Delegation enhances security
Another improvement-Permission Delegation allows organizations to delegate extremely limited transaction rights without relinquishing control of the master signing key. This feature is designed for financial teams and financial institutions that need to authorize regular transactions, while allowing them to maintain tight control over critical issuance and reserve accounts.
Sponsored Sponsored Fees and Reserves simplify the entry process
In addition, Sponsored The Sponsored Fees and Reserves proposal aims to simplify the user entry process by allowing banks, issuers, or platforms to pay XRP transaction fees and reserve requirements on behalf of users. This means new users can register or pay transaction fees without having to purchase XRP, solving a usability barrier that has long plagued newcomers. Users can still access their wallets and private keys.
Dynamic MPT brings flexibility
The fifth improvement-Dynamic MPT allows issuers to modify the attributes of selected tokens on XRP Ledger. These attributes include transfer fees, token metadata, and other functions that are predefined after the token is issued without the need to reissue a new token.
Cooper said: "The version is expected to be released next week. As always, these improvements will only be activated after approval by the verification node." She also urged verification node operators to pay attention to upcoming improvements.
This proposed release comes just days after XRP Ledger activates fixCleanup 3.2.0 improvements that fix multiple errors in vaults, loan agreements, licensing domains, multi-purpose tokens, and licensing decentralized exchanges. More than 80% of verification nodes expressed support for the improvement before it was activated, demonstrating continued engagement in network governance.
Like previous upgrades, xrpld 3.3.0 will first make proposed improvements available for voting. These improvements will only become part of the XRP Ledger protocol after consensus is reached among verification nodes, ensuring that the decentralized network, rather than Ripple, ultimately decides whether to activate new features.
As with all XRPL protocol upgrades, the proposed improvements will not take effect immediately after software release. The verification node must first approve each improvement through the network's decentralized governance mechanisms. Once an improvement has been approved by at least 80% of trusted validation nodes for two consecutive weeks, it is enabled on XRP Ledger. This governance model is designed to ensure that new features gain broad support before they are permanently introduced.
