Dijkstra era takes shape: After Cardano's van Rossem hard fork
On July 18, Cardano activated the van Rossem era hard fork and upgraded the protocol to version 11. This update improves Plutus performance and strengthens ledger consistency and node security.
However, the big story is yet to come: This hard fork actually paved the way for the Dijkstra era, and is the next major step in the Cardano technology roadmap. In its weekly report, Intersect, a member organization that coordinates ecosystem development, confirmed that Dijkstra era planning is now underway and that the process aims to involve the community in defining the scope of future forking. This transition continues the on-chain governance model pioneered by Cardano through the first hard fork driven entirely by ADA holders.
Initial deployment in the Dijkstra era will take place in multiple phases, each phase bringing key innovations. The first phase will introduce nested transactions, a mechanism that allows transactions to be nested among each other, designed to optimize resource management and reduce network load. Next is Linear Leios, a linear version of the Ouroboros Leios protocol, which is the core of Cardano's expansion. This next-generation consensus protocol aims to significantly improve network throughput while maintaining Cardano's consistent security and decentralization characteristics. Finally, Peras will enhance transaction finality by accelerating the time it takes for a transaction to be deemed irreversible.
The Haskell node team is currently working to deploy the first two phases (nested transactions and Linear Leios) to the mainnet by the end of 2026.
On-chain governance and the next hard fork naming controversy
At the same time, Cardano governance is actively advancing in many aspects. A parameter update operation has been open to voting, the Constitutional Council election has been held online, and the Constitution Amendment Portal (CAP) has released an Alpha version for community testing. These mechanisms demonstrate the rise of decentralized governance, where every ADA holder can participate in protocol decision-making. In terms of naming, a working group proposed naming the next hard fork Alexander Esgen, while a motion on the necklace suggested naming it Fabian von Bergen. Communities are invited to provide feedback.
In short, Cardano is entering a critical new phase of its roadmap through the Dijkstra era. Its three technology pillars (Nested Transactions, Linear Leios and Peras) depict a faster, more scalable and smoother network for users.
