Orbs launches OIP-9 governance vote to build a DAO and push it into centralization

Orbs launches OIP-9 governance vote to build its DAO and expand community control over protocol decisions. Orbs launched its first DAO proposal, giving pledged token holders the role of participating in protocol governance. OIP-9 marks Orbs 'transition to progressive decentralization through a new community-led governance framework.

Orbs announced the launch of OIP-9 (Orbs Improvement Proposal 9), the project's first formal community governance vote to establish the Orbs DAO and introduce its governance framework. If approved by the community, the proposal would create an initial governance layer for the DAO, empowering eligible participants in specific protocol areas, while laying the foundation for progressive decentralization.

This proposal marks the next stage in Orbs 'governance evolution after more than seven years of protocol development and nearly four years of on-chain governance. During this period, the network has evolved into a real-time Layer-3 infrastructure that supports decentralized financial applications and execution products in multiple blockchain ecosystems. The governance proposal formalizes the community's role in oversight agreements through a structured, phased approach, prioritizing decentralization and operational security.

Ran Hammer, vice president of business development at Orbs, said the proposal aims to balance decentralization with community governance capabilities. According to Hammer, the proposal established a governance framework with clear authority from the beginning, while allowing communities to gradually assume greater responsibilities. He added that the approach aims to lay the foundation for the next phase of the Orbs ecosystem.

Under OIP-9, governance participation will initially be open to holders of tokens pledged in Orbs Proof of Interest contracts. The DAO will operate through community proposals and snapshot voting, and approved decisions will be executed through a dedicated DAO controlled multi-signature wallet. If approved, the DAO will initially oversee selected network parameters, including proof of stake infrastructure, guardian certification and revocation, approval of major protocol upgrades, and approval of new protocol deployments and network-level product modules. Together, these responsibilities aim to empower communities with real power over the network while maintaining the initial scope centralized and controllable.

The proposal does not attempt to decentralize every aspect of the agreement at once, but instead uses a progressive governance model that expands community responsibility over time. As the DAO accumulates operational experience and governance processes, future governance proposals may cover areas such as agreement revenue, fund management, liquidity strategies, funding, destruction mechanisms, and broader token economics.

To ensure network stability during the transition, the proposal also includes a limited emergency mechanism that allows the Orbs core team to respond when immediate action is needed and community voting is not feasible. Any use of emergency powers will subsequently require approval through DAO governance to maintain transparency and community oversight.

If approved, the proposal will also lay the governance foundation for the next phase of the Orbs roadmap, including the planned first-quarter token economics proposal. By first establishing the structure and power of the DAO, Orbs aims to drive future community decisions about the protocol economy, network incentives, and ecosystem growth through an increasingly decentralized governance process.
