Zcash is about to hold a major governance vote requiring a 1 million ZEC participation threshold

Zcash, a privacy-protected cryptocurrency launched in 2016, is preparing for a key governance event for its upcoming NU7 network upgrade-token holders will vote on the proposed scope of the upgrade. The voting period will begin on August 25 and is expected to last for approximately 18 days, during which a number of key agreement changes will be reviewed.

New governance mechanism and voting process

This vote introduces Zcash's new governance framework. Valar Group and Project Tachyon coordinated the use of a recently developed token holder voting chain to implement the process. The infrastructure replaces Zcash's original governance mechanism and leverages a distributed electoral authority composed of at least 10 verification nodes. The vote count results can only be obtained after two-thirds of the verification node set is approved, a move that enhances security and collective oversight.

A key legitimacy condition has been set: the voting process requires at least 1 million ZEC participants. If this quorum is not reached, the vote will not be considered valid-marking an important threshold for participation for the Zcash community.

To participate in voting, users must hold a expendable blocked ZEC in Ironwood wallet at the snapshot time point of 19:00 UTC on August 24. After the snapshot is completed, voters can freely transfer funds, and the voting window will remain open until September 12.

Small Dictionary: Ironwood, Zcash reference wallet, was developed specifically to support blocked transactions, allowing users to store and trade ZECs using privacy features.

Voting Question

Token holders will weigh multiple issues, covering technology, scheduling and basic economic parameters. Among the most important proposals, participants will decide whether to transform Zcash's current halving plan into a smoother distribution model through the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM). Votes will also include: when to activate the transaction fee retransmission mechanism, whether to abandon the old Sprout transaction format, and whether to shorten the block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. In addition, voters will set guidelines on how quickly NU7 upgrades should be issued if certain features miss the initial deadline.

Small Dictionary: The Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), a proposed protocol change to the Zcash distribution model, replaces a sharp halving with a gradual, predictable reduction in mining rewards, designed to promote long-term security and development funding.

Participation threshold and its significance

requires at least 1 million ZECs to participate, which accounts for a significant proportion of Zcash's circulation supply. Given that Zcash's total circulation supply is much lower than Bitcoin, reaching this quorum would demonstrate a high degree of community participation and potentially enhance the legitimacy of on-chain governance in deciding future technology changes.

ZEC Technical Performance and Market Conditions

ZEC's technical indicators have improved recently. The token is currently trading at a price above its 20-day, 50-day and 100-day moving averages, while the 200-day moving average continues to show an upward trend below the current price. Tokens have exceeded the critical psychological $500 barrier and consolidated in nearby support areas. As the Relative Strength Index (RSI) rebounded to around 54, market momentum was neutral and conditions did not show significant overbought pressure.

If ZEC can stay above the short-term moving average cluster, analysts may expect it to try to hit the previous highs it hit earlier this summer.

Zcash token holders will vote on proposals such as new issuance plans, transaction fee policies and shorter block times, while the 1 million ZEC participating quorum is designed to ensure that decisions made during the upcoming NU7 upgrade have strong governance legitimacy.
