In today's cryptocurrency news, the Zcash community focuses on the network's next big governance moment. Community voting will begin on August 25, 2026 and last approximately 18 days. Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe (ebfull) confirmed the announcement. The vote concerns the upcoming scope of the NU7 upgrade, which has been in the works for a long time.
What is this vote about?
According to a discussion for NU7 token holders posted on the Zcash community forum, a previous governance vote was postponed due to Orchard counterfeiting and Ironwood/NU6.3 work becoming a higher priority. Now, Valar Group and Project Tachyon are calling for a new round of voting, this time using a privacy-sensitive voting system built specifically for the process.
How does the governance process work?
The governance process announced on the Zcash community forum states that voting will be conducted on a dedicated privacy protection chain developed by Valar Group. Key details include:
Voters need to have available blocking funds in the Ironwood network at snapshot time (August 24, 2026, 19:00 UTC). Eligible ZECs can vote before 19:00 UTC on September 12, 2026. A distributed electoral body composed of at least 10 verifiers is responsible for counting votes and will not know the identity of voters. The results will be announced shortly after the polls close. This blocking design protects voter privacy while also generating voting results that can be verified by anyone.
Threshold of 1 million ZEC
For the results to be representative, the voting participation rate needs to meet the following thresholds: a minimum participation of 1,000,000 ZEC is required, Ironwood is for the snapshot network, and Vizor is for the supported wallet (confirmed). If participation falls below the 1 million ZEC threshold, the results will not be considered representative of the broader community of token holders.
Voting content
There are five questions in this voting: circulation smooth-replace halving with a gradual curve, or maintain the original halving plan;NSM re-issue launch date-start fee re-issue immediately after NSM is activated, or postpone until around 2032;Sprout retirement-when will the old version of v4 transactions be finally disabled; Block time reduction-whether to shorten the block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds according to ZIP-218; NU7 release plan-release on time and discard any features that are not ready, or postpone release until all features are complete. Each question contains a waiver option, and regardless of the decision, the total ZEC supply remains unchanged.
Why do we do it now?
According to the latest Zcash news, the timing of the move reflects lessons learned from previous cancelled governance attempts. The cost-burning component of the network sustainability mechanism has been approved. What remains are more complex decisions, including circulation smoothing, retirement schedules and technical milestones that still require community approval.
Next steps
After the voting starts, wallets such as Vizor will directly support participation, so token holders do not need to do additional operations. The entire process is also designed to be auditable. The final results are expected to be announced shortly after the polls close on September 12, 2026.
ZEC price response is limited
In today's cryptocurrency news, despite governance announcements, Zcash news shows that market response is limited. As of writing, the token trading price is approximately $511.69, down approximately 0.91% in the past 24 hours, indicating that traders have not yet included the upcoming NU7 community vote in pricing.
Investors appear to be waiting for the August 25 voting period and final results before taking larger positions.
