Andre Cronje: Most current DeFi protocols are no longer truly decentralized

Andre Cronje, founder of Flying Tulip and founder of Fantom Network, said that the vast majority of decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols today no longer have substantial decentralization characteristics. During the discussion of Chain Reaction X Spaces, Cronje elaborated on his view: Except for a few niche projects, DeFi's original form has basically disappeared.

Cronje questions the current degree of decentralization in the DeFi field.

Cronje is a well-known figure in the DeFi field. He emphasizes that true decentralization requires that protocols must be unmutable and free from intermediary interference. In his view, this definition does not apply to the vast majority of current DeFi platforms. "True DeFi," he argues, must give users full autonomy and operational transparency, and be free from centralized regulation. Cronje observes that most protocols today incorporate design features such as fuses and emergency controls-measures that were originally designed to keep users safe but, in his view, introduce centralized elements into the system.

Cronje says: "DeFi is supposed to be decentralized, tamper-proof and run without intermediaries, but almost all existing protocols no longer adhere to these standards." "I think DeFi is gone, except in some very niche areas," he notes.

Cronje has raised these concerns several times in recent months, stressing that fundamental principles in this field are shifting. He noted that discussions within the industry are increasingly focused on how to balance user protection with the ideal of decentralization.

Decentralized control and the decline in TVL

The total locked position volume (TVL) of the DeFi protocol has dropped significantly. Data from DefiLlama shows that TVL dropped from US$167 billion in October 2025 to US$75 billion in June 2026. The reduction in TVL reflects changes in user confidence and growing concerns about platform autonomy.

Regulators have also begun to agree with these doubts. For example, in a working paper published in March, the European Central Bank questioned whether decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) could really operate outside the scope of regulation. The paper analyzed well-known DeFi platforms such as Aave, MakerDAO, Ampleforth and Uniswap and found that more than 80% of governance tokens in each protocol are held by the top 100 holders.

ECB researchers believe that these findings raise doubts about whether the DAO has truly achieved decentralization, and in turn whether it qualifies for the exemption provisions of the EU Cryptographic Asset Markets Regulation (MiCA). Currently, the regulation provides certain regulatory easing for fully decentralized services.

Small Dictionary: MiCA (Crypto Asset Market Regulation) is a set of regulatory frameworks developed by the European Union that aims to coordinate the crypto asset rules of member states and provide regulatory clarity to digital asset operators.

Cronje describes this evolution as a shift to an "on-chain finance" or "open finance" model that introduces more supervision while also opening up new opportunities for transparency and innovation. Although the field has changed, Cronje acknowledges that innovation that truly adheres to decentralization still exists in a few select projects.

Cronje's background and current projects

Cronje remains a well-respected entrepreneur in the DeFi industry. In addition to his latest contributions to Flying Tulip and Fantom, he is also the founder of Yearn.finance and Keep3r Network-both projects that have important impacts in the decentralization field. The Sonic blockchain project he leads claims to provide the fastest Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chain, achieving final confirmation of transactions in 720 milliseconds in a testnet environment.

Small Dictionary: Fantom Network is a Layer 1 smart contract platform known for its high transaction throughput and support for decentralized applications.

Despite a shift in perceptions of the decentralized purity of DeFi, Cronje remains optimistic about the potential of innovative, user-oriented protocols.
