DeFi visionaries criticize deviations from decentralization concepts

In a candid conversation, Andre Cronje, founder of Fantom Network and the driving force behind Flying Tulip, shared his insights on the current state of decentralized finance (DeFi). He worries that many contemporary DeFi platforms have deviated from the basic principles of true decentralization. Cronje believes this shift makes most DeFi protocols indistinguishable from traditional financial models.

Is today's DeFi truly decentralized?

Cronje firmly believes that the essence of DeFi is fading. He defines true decentralization as a system that is not disrupted by centralized controls and intermediaries, a standard that few platforms today can meet. Many DeFi systems introduce functions such as a fuse mechanism and emergency control. Although improving user safety, they also introduce centralized control.

What are the reasons behind the decline in TVL?

The total lock-in value (TVL) in DeFi has experienced a significant decline, from US$167 billion in October 2025 to just US$75 billion in June 2026. This significant decline reflects reduced user trust and concerns about reduced platform autonomy.

Regulatory review has also intensified, with institutions such as the European Central Bank (ECB) questioning the degree of decentralization of popular platforms such as Aave, MakerDAO and Uniswap. ECB survey results show that more than 80% of governance tokens in each agreement are controlled by the top 100 holders, challenging its decentralization claims.

It can be seen that the DeFi industry seems to be losing its original decentralization foundation. The sharp decline in TVL reflects changes in user sentiment. Regulators are increasingly skeptical of DeFi's decentralization claims.

Cronje also explores the possibility of a new paradigm known as "on-chain finance" or "open finance" that may fall between regulation and innovation, providing both supervision and new development opportunities.

As a leader in DeFi, Cronje continues to participate in groundbreaking projects such as Yearn.finance and the Keep3r Network. His work on Sonic's blockchain demonstrates his commitment to technological progress, with its test network with excellent transaction speeds.

Despite the criticism, Cronje remains optimistic about the future. He believes that projects that adhere to the concept of true decentralization have the potential to promote meaningful innovation in the digital finance world.
