Optimism token holders voted to transfer 546.9 million OPs

Optimism token holders have voted to transfer 546.9 million OPs from community user airdrop reserves. The tokens are worth approximately $49 million and will be injected into a new pool of funds managed by the Optimism Foundation. Voting ends on August 19, 2026.

Optimism voters broke the 51% threshold with a total support rating of 62%.

According to the proposal page on Agora, the bill was passed with 17,973,915 votes in favor and 10,930,696 votes against. Support accounted for approximately 62% of the total vote, exceeding the approval threshold of 51%. The vote also met the quorum requirement of 16,540,389 votes. The proposal is currently marked as "queued" and voting ended at 8:07 pm on August 19.

The final vote depends on the crucial vote cast at the last minute by a team funded by Optimism itself. On-chain records only show the cumulative total and do not disclose the size of a single vote or the identity of the voter.

Optimism Foundation strengthens control over OPs

This proposal was submitted by the Optimism Foundation to redesignate the remaining OPs in user airdrop allocations as "Strategic Ecosystem Fund." The document itself does not involve substantive on-chain transactions, but rather a governance decision about how to mark a large amount of tokens and who manages them.

The foundation said that the renamed fund will be used to support the adoption of OP mainnet and OP enterprise editions. The proposal text covers a "cooperation agreement to bring chains, protocols, institutions and infrastructure to OP Stack." It also includes incentives to enhance OP Mainnet activity and liquidity, and plans to enhance OP Stack's influence among institutions and major brands. Tokens that were once earmarked for distribution to users have now become discretionary funds used for business development.

OP prices continue to be sluggish and governance power is re-concentrated.

OP fell to a low of US$0.2519 in December 2025. Since then, the foundation has submitted multiple proposals aimed at increasing its control over the use of OP and treasury assets. Just three days ago, OP hit an all-time low of $0.08069, and even after this week's rebound, the token price was only 25% above that bottom. OP is currently trading at $0.1008, up 10.7% intraday and 14% intraweek, according to CoinGecko. The market value of this second-tier platform token is approximately US$230.8 million, and the 24-hour transaction volume is US$57.8 million.
