Zcash (ZEC) holders are about to receive the NU7 vote: The main network snapshot is scheduled for August 24, 2026.
Zcash (ZEC) holders will soon be able to directly participate in agreement decision-making through the upcoming NU7 holder vote. This mechanism links voting rights to the number of ZECs held in blocked form, which is different from governance systems that rely on validators or delegated voting structures.
Mainnet Snapshots and Eligibility
Eligibility for NU7 holders to vote will be determined through a snapshot of the Zcash Mainnet at block height of 3,459,350, which is expected to occur around 22:20 GMT+3 time on August 24, 2026. The specific snapshot time depends on the mining time of the target block, so the block height rather than the local time is the decisive factor.
Only the expendable shield ZECs stored in the Ironwood protocol at the time of the snapshot are eligible to vote. Tokens located in Orchard, Sapling or Sprout pools, as well as transparent ZECs, are not included in the calculation unless they have been migrated to Ironwood. In addition, if the holder deposits the ZEC on a centralized exchange or external network, he must transfer it to Ironwood for autonomous custody before taking a snapshot to participate in voting.
Unlike other blockchain voting, participants do not need to retain their ZEC throughout the voting period. Once the main network records block 3,459,350, users can freely transfer tokens-eligibility is determined only by the holding status at the instant of the snapshot.
Voting timeline and wallet support
The voting process will begin on August 25 and end at 22:00 GMT+3 on September 14. Multiple wallets support NU7 voting, including Vizor, Zashi and Zkool, allowing users to participate. Users with Keystone hardware wallets can also vote while keeping their private keys securely on their devices.
This round of voting involves a number of important protocol adjustments, including determining the issuance rate of new ZECs, setting a timetable for reintroducing previously removed tokens through future block rewards, and deciding when to completely disable legacy Sprout transactions in the network.
Voting Mechanism and Privacy Protection
In order to ensure privacy and security, Zcash networks use homomorphic encryption technology during the voting process. This technology fully encrypts each voting choice and its corresponding number of ZECs, and only the total number of votes for each option can be viewed after voting. In addition, each vote is split into 16 unrelated shares, further preventing voting preferences from being correlated with specific balances.
