ZEC Major changes for Zcash: Upcoming NU7 vote to prepare for network upgrades
The Zcash community is preparing for a key token ownership vote that will determine the direction of the upcoming NU7 upgrade. ZEC token holders will have the opportunity to vote directly based on their blocked balances without having to rely on a validator or agent. Voting eligibility will be determined by a snapshot of the Zcash mainnet at the block height of 3,459,350.
Voting timeline analysis
This snapshot is expected to take place at approximately 22:20 Turkish time on August 24, 2026, but the final confirmation is based on the height of the block. To be eligible to vote, the ZEC balance must be blocked, available and stored in Ironwood at that moment.
Tokens stored in Orchard, Sapling or Sprout pools, as well as transparent ZEC balances (unless transferred in advance), are not eligible to vote. ZECs stored on exchanges or other networked environments must be transferred to the individual's storage address in Ironwood. Zcash is a privacy-focused blockchain network, and ZEC is its native asset.
ZEC balances must be masked during the snapshot and available in Ironwood. After Block 3,459,350, there is no need to hold tokens until the end of voting.
The voting period starts on August 25 and ends at 22:00 Turkish time on September 14. Wallets compatible with this voting app include Vizor, Zashi and Zkool. Keystone hardware wallet users can participate without extracting the key.
Key issues in the voting
The voting covered important technical and economic issues for Zcash. These topics include the release rate of new ZECs, the timing of reactivating the number of deactivated ZECs through block rewards, and the network shutting down of legacy Sprout transactions.
These considerations are critical to the NU7 upgrade and therefore of great significance to the community. The voting model does not require users to continue to hold tokens after a snapshot to maintain eligibility, allowing users to transfer ZEC after obtaining eligibility for Block 3,459,350.
The mystery of anonymous voting
The system uses homomorphic encryption technology to keep the voting content and the number of associated ZECs confidential during processing. Only the total number of ZECs for each option will be visible after completion.
Each vote was split into 16 separate segments to hide the correlation between the balance and voting choices. This framework is designed to enhance personal privacy while still allowing observation of aggregated results.
Eligible ZEC balances must exist in Ironwood at the time of the snapshot.
The voting period is from August 25 to September 14, 2026.
Wallets supporting voting include Vizor, Zashi and Zkool.
Keystone Hardware Wallet users do not need to remove the key to participate.
Homomorphic encryption ensures the anonymity of voting and only displays summary results.
