Cardano officially activates version 11 of the protocol through Van Rossem hard fork
Cardano, a decentralized blockchain platform, has officially activated version 11 of the protocol (PV11) through Van Rossem hard fork. This is the first time that a network upgrade has been fully approved by the community through on-chain voting. The upgrade also brings faster and cheaper smart contracts, providing developers with more powerful tools to build applications on blockchain.
Cardano launches first fully on-chain governed hard fork
Cardano has officially activated the Van Rossem hard fork to upgrade the network to protocol version 11. Unlike previous upgrades, this is the first time that Cardano has been approved entirely through on-chain governance. The proposal was voted on jointly by delegated representatives (DReps), pledge pool operators (SPOs) and the Constitutional Council (CC), all of which are part of the new governance system introduced by Cardano in the Conway era.
Afterwas successfully activated, Intersect, the organization coordinating the Cardano governance process, confirmed that the upgrade was available on the main network.
Intersect announced: "The Van Rossem hard fork has been successfully implemented on the Cardano main network." I would like to thank our ecological partners, developers, exchanges, DReps, SPOs and members of the Constitutional Council for helping complete this upgrade safely.
What new changes have been brought about by version 11 of the protocol?
Version 11 of the protocol is mainly focused on making Cardano smarter, faster, and more efficient to help developers build decentralized applications (DApps). This upgrade introduces a number of improvements, including:
- Introduce new Plutus smart contract capabilities through multiple Cardano Improvement Proposals (CIP).
- Reduce smart contract execution costs through improved cost models.
- Uses new case expressions for boolean values, integers, and data types for faster processing times.
- Extended cryptographic functions, including support for BLS12-381.
- Improve consistency between Plutus V1, V2, and V3, allowing developers to use the same built-in functions in all versions.
- Strengthen ledger rules and improve network security.
According to Intersect, testing showed no performance degradation after the upgrade, and a security audit also confirmed the safety of the new Plutus feature and execution cost model. In addition, the transaction format remains unchanged, making the transition to existing applications smoother.
Upgrade paves the way for Cardano's next phase
In addition to improving current network performance, version 11 of the protocol also lays the technical foundation for Cardano's upcoming Dijkstra era, which is expected to bring more advanced smart contract capabilities.
Intersect's hard fork working group recommended the hard fork in June, was subsequently approved by its technical steering committee, and enough governance votes were accumulated before it could be moved forward. Prior to activation, Cardano's constitution requires at least 85% of the active pledge pool to be upgraded to compatible node software to ensure a smooth transition to the network.
After the successful upgrade, ADA received a mild market response and the price rose to approximately US$0.1649.
