ENS DAO adds security mechanisms to protect against malicious proposals

Why a security committee

The Ethereum Domain Name Service (ENS) DAO has approved a proposal to activate a new security committee consisting of eight members for a two-year term designed to serve as a last line of defense against malicious governance attacks.

As the proportion of $ENS tokens voluntarily entrusted declined, an imbalance gradually emerged: attackers could theoretically purchase enough $ENS at a lower cost to seize control of the DAO, and this cost is lower than the total value of the DAO vault.

The Security Committee was established to solve the loopholes caused by the low voting participation rate relative to the size of the treasury.

The executable proposal grants veto power through a single call to the DAO's Timelock Controller, while assigning cancellation roles to a security committee contract built by security company Blockful.

The powers and limitations of the committee

The powers of the committee are deliberately limited to a small extent. It can only cancel time-lock proposals it deems malicious, and has no other authority.

Committees cannot propose, modify or initiate any governance actions.

The new committee will raise the threshold for canceling proposals from the original 4-of-8 multi-signature to 5-of-8.

ENS governance process includes: proposal first goes through governance contract, if approved, enters into time lock contract, execution delay of two days. Interventions are only possible during this two-day window.

Elected members are required to sign a binding Appointment Agreement with the ENS Foundation and accept public authorization. The committee has a member withdrawal mechanism. If a member's behavior exceeds the scope of authorization, he or she can be dismissed. In addition, members must complete mandatory customer identification (KYC) and background checks before taking office.

Nick Johnson, who goes by the pseudonym nick.eth, submitted the executable proposal and pushed it to the Tally platform for online voting.

The current committee's term ends on July 24, and if a vacancy occurs, the DAO will lose veto coverage.

The new proposal to establish a safety committee based on the results of EP 6.50 "New ENS DAO Security Committee Election" for a two-year term that ends on July 16, 2028.

Anyone can revoke the committee's cancellation authority after a specified expiration period, ensuring that this is a time-limited mechanism that will return to a more decentralized state by default.
